JK Rowling, Benedict Cumberbatch and Louise Brealey at the Cheltenham Literature Festival

Saw JK Rowling and Benedict Cumberbatch & Louise Brealey at the Cheltenham Literature Festival yesterday :)

Highlights:

James Runcie, who was conducting the JK Rowling interview, called them the warm-up act for Benedict Cumberbatch ;)

JK Rowling was as OMG about her being in the Olympics and the massive Voldemort as we were

She still feels bad about killing Dobby

Jo March (Little Women) is one of her favourite characters

She knows teenagers are nowhere near as bad as everyone thinks they are

Her next book should be a kids’ one, aimed at younger children than Harry Potter

She offered very good advice to the questions about writing (and sort of mentioned fanfic - learning by imitating other authors)

She was kind enough to accept a letter from a girl who had been to the South Bank Centre event and who presumably had more to tell JK than time at that allowed for

She had her English teacher in the audience

The cheer Benedict and Louise got when they came on stage lasted for a couple of minutes :)

Much like Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill, there was a bit of going off into their own world - they were very sweet and very giggly, together

Mr Hiddlestone’s name got a cheer ;)

Louise told us about a couple of dreams she’d had - one involved being topless, running around the Shire with Hobbit!Martin, being chased by a dragon, which was probably Benedict :)

Benedict’s headmaster and his wife were in the audience

There was some more clearing up of the “Elementary” misquotes mess, and Benedict encouraged us to watch it

Watson isn't a sidekick (Benedict hates the word and he's sure Martin does too), he's Sherlock's Boswell, his blogger, his right hand man - they’re a double act

Benedict told us about doing the bike ride for The Prince’s Trust next weekend, and why he supports that charity

Benedict did not tell us:

when he’s growing back his Sherlock hair
anything about the Star Trek film
anything about the Hobbit, other than doing motion capture work for Smaug AND The Necromancer (which I don’t think we already knew)

They only noticed the big screen towards the end of the show XD

Benedict responded to the warm-up act comment from earlier with nothing but praise and admiration for JK Rowling

His “Sherlock” audition was at Beryl Vertue’s flat, where he got tea and biscuits :)

Benedict gave us his Alan Rickman and Steven Moffat (which, by his own admission, sounds a bit too like his David Tennant) impressions

Christopher Tietjens is Benedict’s favourite part, out of everything he’s done

He offered very good advice to the questions about acting

He can cry on cue by thinking about why the character feels the way they do, and at the end of the run of “After the Dance” this rather got the better of him

He plays villains by not thinking, like the person he’s playing, of the character as evil

There was a bit of talk about Benedict’s motorbike, and Louise said he looks like Elvis in the ’68 comeback special in his bike leathers ;)

Throughout the whole thing, it was apparent, as we all know, that this cast is very fond of each other :)

I’m glad we went, we had a great time, and the questions were very good indeed. If I’ve misremembered something, please correct me. Add anything I’ve forgotten in the comments :)
