You know, if the criminals were going to threaten them with guns, at least they could attempt to do it properly. Rolling his eyes, putting his gloves on, John snatched the suspect’s revolver right out of his hand.

The suspect swore at him, rather loudly, and creatively.

Being used to such language, John ignored him, and instead made a show of inspecting the gun. “Sorry, seems like you didn’t have the hammer cocked,” he said, doing just that. Pointing the weapon at its owner, he pulled the trigger. The gun clicked, uselessly. “Or a bullet in the chamber. Well done, congratulations.”

There was a sound from his left, a muttered “Oh!” He turned to Sherlock, who gave him A Look, and the smile that he knew meant: Well played, John Watson.

John grinned back at him.

“Lestrade, come and arrest this man!” Sherlock called.

Striding up, cuffs and evidence bag at the ready, Lestrade said, “Dr Watson, do you want to explain to me how the hell you know your way around a gun that well?”

Oh, he’d forgotten the DI and his team were with them. Christ, he would have to be even more careful with his own gun, now. No, they would, based on the frequency with which Sherlock “borrowed” his SIG Sauer.

But Sherlock evidently had entirely different thoughts about the situation, as his smile had now turned into a smirk. He took the evidence bag; they watched Lestrade cuff Nathan White.

“I apologise, Inspector. We must have somehow neglected to inform you that Dr Watson was formerly Captain John H Watson, Royal Army Medical Corps. He was an army doctor, of course he knows his way around a bloody gun.”

“Know my way around a rifle, too,” John said, dropping the empty gun into the evidence bag that Sherlock held open, then handed over to one of the Yarders.

“You’re helping, then, next time we end up with a load of sawn off shotguns,” Lestrade replied, hauling the suspect over to a patrol car.

“Yes, of course,” John said, and looked at Sherlock again. He now wore a completely different expression. It was John’s turn to smirk. “Enjoyed that, did you?”

Sherlock just grabbed John’s head between his hands, like he’d done by the railway tracks. He then leaned in and kissed him on the lips, for the first time, which John took as a “yes”.
