Grapevine
by Laura

Eve’s home, she and Matilda are doing well. But how she’s going to get the news out? She could get her agent to make an announcement to the press:

“Eve Myles, star of BBC Wales’ Torchwood, gives birth to a daughter. Myles, who plays Gwen Cooper in the series, and her partner, Brad Freegard, have named the new addition to their family Matilda.”

Or she could ring simply John. She was going to do that anyway, but she’s seen for herself just how bloody fast the Barrowman and Torchwood fan grapevine can operate. Phoning John, she kills two birds with one stone. One afternoon, while Matilda’s sleeping, Eve sits on the sofa and makes the call, smiling to herself at how she’s going to tell him.

John answers with, “Evie!”

She knows Matilda’s going to be spoilt rotten by him anyway, so she may as well make it “official”. “You’ve got a niece, Uncle John,” Eve replies.

That silences John. “Yeah?” he eventually says, voice a little cracked.

“Yeah. Matilda, a beautiful baby girl.”

“Matilda? Hope she’s as magic as her mom, sweetheart.” That makes her smile. Then she hears him shout, “Scottie! Eve and Brad had a girl!” He comes back on the line with, “Scott says congratulations, Evie.”

“Tell Scott he has a niece, too, John.”

“I sure will, honey.”

“Will you tell Gavin, as well?”

He laughs at that, and she knows he’s worked out her plan. “Relying on the Team Barrowman grapevine to get the news out, huh, Evie?”

“Of course I bloody am. Telling you, you telling your lot, and them telling everyone they know, that’s far quicker than telling the press, that is.”

“So true! Saves money, too,” he says, like the bargain hunter he is. “I’ve clearly taught you well, young padawan,” he adds, like the geek he is. “Now get off the line, so I can go gossip!”

That makes her giggle, and they say their farewells. Less than two hours later, her news is online. That makes her laugh, loudly.

“I heard it through the grapevine,” she hums, while feeding Matilda.
