Last Man Standing

(Previously posted as Pictures Tell Stories, some parts of that now included in The Torchwood Girls)

Sat at his desk, Jack examines the photos and slides Ianto’s retrieved from the archives, and the memories come straight back.

Jennifer, Amy, Eleanor, Joan, Penny, Harriet, Louise; all of these women, who’d achieved so very much, under incredibly difficult circumstances, so very long gone.

Joan had qualified as a doctor in the summer of 1927. Jack doesn’t want to think about the vast number of boys Dr Joan Redfern patched up, and sent back to the Front, during those six long, dark years of the Second World War.

In 2008, they have a soldier to, well, not really patch up, but certainly send back to even further than that, to the Great War, so he can repair a time shift, and save the future. Jack’s been preparing for today for ninety years. Like he thought he would be, all the way back in the summer of 1918, he’s dealing with the end of the Tommy Brockless case.

He just wishes he hadn’t had to break quite such dreadful news about Tommy’s fate to Toshiko. He really wishes he wasn’t so sensitive to manifest psychic trauma.

“Excellent work, ladies,” Jack tells the pictures, holding them by the edges, and carefully placing them back in the acid free cardboard box. “Last man standing. Time to save the world, again,” he says to himself, as he puts the lid on the container and pushes away from his desk.
