The People You Meet

It’s a cliché, one of those things that happen to other people, or in stories: "wayward, broken guy is saved by the love of a good woman".
Captain Jack Harkness didn’t tend to associate with “good women”, so he never really expected that kind of thing would happen to him.
It has, though, kind of.
Except, he’s been saved by the love of a teenage girl from three thousand years before his time, a Time Lord from somewhere and somewhen that no longer exists and a sentient time/space-ship.
That’s all a hell of a lot better than a cliché, anyway.
