I like this. Poor damaged Jack, and Joan trying to make sure that he's as safe as may be.

Excellent as ever. Great characterisation of Jack cracking to pieces, and the girls concern over him.

One little point. It takes four and a half hours these days to get to Edinburgh from London, pulled by an Inter City 225 Mallard class. In 1916 it took eight and a quarter hours, with a 15 minute stop at York. When the A1 class Gresleys started to run the Flying Scotsman service in the 1930s, they did the run in seven and a half hours, non-stop (the loco carried two crews), shaving 15 minutes off with the introduction of the Gresley A4 Pacifics. The Flying Scotsman still leaves London at 10.00 daily; the southbound service leaves Edinburgh Waverley at 13.00.

That's true :) I did like that I could make use of that.

(Train times fixed, too. I'd wanted to use The Flying Scotsman or The Mallard, then I discovered that neither of them had been built, in 1917.)
