While I was home over Spring break, Jesse asked me to marry him. This was anticipated, but now the planning process is overwhelming. I can't wait to get over this first planning lump and set a date and a location.
The proposal was romantic. I was really excited to see him since we hadn't seen each other in about a month and a half. Unfortunately, he has night class 3 out of five weeknights so we had a date set the night he didn't have night class (last Tuesday). He took me to the Millenium Hotel restaurant-the one that revolves and you can see the St. Louis sites. We had a nice meal-I had grouper and we split a salad which was seriously the best salad I've ever had. I was about to tell Jesse to ask for the check when the waiter brought out a tray of two desserts and two glasses of champaigne. On the dessert tray was my ring.
Of course, Jesse turns to the waiter and says "Excuse me I think we have the wrong order." Then, he came over to my side of the table, got on one knee and asked me to marry him. I told him he would have to do a little bit better than that, and he read some old conversations that he had printed out, got on one knee, and then asked again. I said yes. Then we walked to the arch and took some pictures.
My ring is beautiful. Small, shiny, and wonderful. My fingers are so tiny so I wouldn't want something huge.
Jesse has spent a lot of time with my parents since then and I think my mom and I are realizing how much Jesse and my dad have in common (strange sarcastic sense of humor, shyness, ackward socialization, kindness). This commonality is helping my dad and Jesse to get along, and is helping my mom to like Jesse more and also helping to draw Jesse out of his shell. So, this is good.
Planning has been overwhelming. I feel like the undying question is "When?" I think we've settled on either August 30, 2008 or August 31, 2008-Labor day weekend. People will have extra time to travel, and at some of the venues we will get a discount if we do the wedding on that Sunday. And we will have all summer to work out last minute details. The bad thing is that we may already be working, and so we won't be able to take a honeymoon right away. We also don't really know where we would be working-like, what if we are working in Washington D.C-it would be kind of overwhelming to get married in St. Louis and then head back to work on Tuesday. And, I don't want to live with Jesse before we are married-but it would only make sense if we were both working there and getting married in less than a month. But, these are things that we can't predict so right now we've just got to go with the flow. I could have a job even over the summer, so the same factors may be in play. I'm almost positive we're picking August 31 at a contemporary art museum in St. Louis.
So, excited, kind of overwhelmed, but mostly excited. :)
