Ah, Conservative with a capital C. As in 'British political party. Much of your point still stands though probably. As far as I'm aware the the Conservatives plan to provide tax breaks for married couples. This is a plan to reduce the cost to the tax payer of supporting poor, usually single parent, families. You see if you're a single parent in the UK you are often entitled quite a lot of financial help, but if you are part of a couple then there's less help, usually because there is at least one parent working. Their theory is based on statistics that "show" that couples who are married stay together for longer. Obviously that doesn't take into consideration both that those more likely to stay together are more likely to marry AND that it'll be a long time before the proposed tax breaks would earn enough back to pay for even a very modest wedding.
I have no problem with their desire to reduce the number of single parent households nor their burden on the tax payer, but I don't like this method. I don't believe that it will improve the quality of life of anyone. Reduce the cost? Maybe. But it will reduce the quality of life of some of the poorest. Now people can hate me for this but I think until we make life more equal (from the bottom up and not the top down) we should encourage people to consider their own responsibility to finance their own children. Or to not have children. It's a difficult situation, but tax breaks for married couples aain't gonna help.
