Sadly, my parents are a heterosexual couple and running into similar problems concerning my father's health. They are not married but have been together for almost 33 years.Living wills, power of attorney and such are all in place but things like this could still easily happen with them. This is not just a GLBT issue but one for all couples who are not married. It really is deplorable, scary and sick.

Oh it definitely does. I know about it first hand. When my dad went into the hospital my mom wasn't allowed to stay past visiting hours because "she was not his wife or family". I had to go and talk to the director of the wing to have her listed on his papers as family in the hospital. It is really fucked that shit like this goes down.
