Bottom line - American Express' dedicated pay-by-phone line has been hijacked. If you pay by phone, do NOT dial the new number; do NOT, NOT, NOT give out your number; call customer service and tell them what happened.
apparently their pay by phone number has a message instructing you to dial some number Amex does not own.... this may have also happened to other Credit Card Companies... their customer service number is still fine.
