Snow floated softly outside of New York City on a wintry Christmas Eve. In a house just outside the city, Alfred was finishing the final touches to his tree. Grinning, he went to go check on his Christmas dinner. He had to make sure it was amazingly awesome before Arthur arrived. “Arthur,” Alfred sighed with glee. Just the thought of Arthur made Alfred want to smile big and jump up in joy. The two had finally confessed their feelings to each other a year before, and this would be their first Christmas together as an official couple. Alfred chuckled remembering New Year’s Eve, when the two confessed and had shared their first kiss. Sighing again, Alfred checked on the turkey he was cooking when the doorbell rang. “Artie’s here,” he squealed.
Standing outside in the snow, Arthur Kirkland rang the doorbell for the second time. “What in the world is that idiot doing,” he wondered, rubbing his arms to keep warm. The snow fell lightly on his hair as he stood in his green coat. The door started to open and Arthur huffed. “Well it’s about bloody…”
“ARTIE!” Alfred screamed as he engulfed the Englishman into a bone crushing hug.
Arthur, blushing red, awkwardly hugged him back. “Yes, yes, I’m here. Now, let go of me, you buffoon!”
Alfred laughed, before loosening his grip on Arthur, though still holding him. “I can’t help it! I’m just really happy to see you!”
Arthur huffed, but let a small smile cross his face. Patting his back, he slightly pushed him away and began to walk inside. But before he could make it, Alfred pulled back. Looking at him questionably, Alfred simply smiled and pointed up. Glancing up, Arthur could not help but roll his eyes when he saw the mistletoe. “You been spending too much time around Francis,” he said with a half glare half smirk.
Alfred pouted before laughing. He then leaned forward to gently kiss Arthur.

Arthur stood in the living room taking in the decorations. A fire was burning in the fireplace, where two stockings were hung. The tree was covered with ornaments, candy canes, and a giant gold star at the top. Little Santa’s were placed all around the room, with the smell of turkey coming from the kitchen. Going into the kitchen, he saw Alfred take the turkey out of the oven, salad on one side of him with cookie dough on the other side. He started to go help mix the salad before Alfred stopped him. “Oh no. No way, you stay away from the salad.”
Arthur half glared. “Well, why not?! Honestly, I’m not going to put poison in it or something, I was just going to help…”
“That’s the equivalent of poisoning it!”
“Why you little…” But before Arthur could finish his insult, a cup was thrust into his face. Blinking, he took the cup to see that it was tea. Surprised that he didn’t smell the tea sooner, he cautiously took a sip. His eyes opened wide when he saw that it actually tasted good. “Um…thank you,” he said softly.
Alfred smiled, “I figured you would want some tea once you got here, seeing as you can’t go a day without it!”
Arthur wanted to say something back, but he kept to himself, simply enjoying the aroma of his Earl Grey.

After dinner, Alfred convinced Arthur to cut out the sugar cookies together. Alfred smiled softly watching Arthur get the flour ready. He remembered doing this alone most of the time the years prior, except when he was able to convince Matthew to do it with him. He hadn’t made cookies with Arthur since long ago. Shaking his head, he went to set out the cookies so that they could start…and then found his face full of flour. “What in the world?”
He turned to see Arthur smirking. “That was for badmouthing my cooking earlier,” he said haughtily, before turning to put flour on the dough.
Alfred pouted, but then smirked. “Two can play at that game,” he thought, scooping up some flour and dumping it on Arthur’s head. “Why you little,” Arthur shouted, chasing the laughing American around the kitchen. This went on for about five minutes, flour flying about, until Alfred grabbed Arthur and hugged him. Despite his struggling, Arthur sighed and hugged back. “Alright, let’s go do this,” he said pointing to the tray.
Alfred giggled. “That’s what she said.”
“…I really hate you sometimes.”
“I love you too Artie!”

Around 11:00pm, after cleaning up the flour and baking half burned cookies (Which Alfred blamed on Arthur), the two nations went over to the couch to watch, what Alfred called, “Good ole Christmas Specials!” Arthur sat close to Alfred, who was holding on to him tightly. Arthur smiled slightly. “Last year I was just getting home around this time, while being very drunk,” he thought, “I think the fairies brought me home. Heh, it was right before I found out Alfred loved me.”
He lay his head down on Alfred’s shoulder, when, “Wait, we should open presents now!”
Alfred jumped up, hitting Arthur’s head hard. “Bloody hell,” Arthur grumbled rubbing his head.
Alfred almost ran to the tree to get Arthur’s present. Pushing it into Arthur’s hands, he said, “Go on, open it, open it, open it!”
“Wait a minute,” Arthur said, composing himself to look at what Alfred had given him. It was in a big box, covered in Superman wrapping paper. Rolling his eyes, Arthur unwrapped the present. “This isn’t going to be like that lamp shaped like a women’s leg again, is it?”
Alfred simply laughed. “No, that was Francis’s idea! Go on, open it!”
Arthur sighed and finished opening the gift. What was inside surprised him. “Is…is this...”
Inside was a ceramic tea set. On top of that however, were hand sewn mittens with little unicorns on them. Alfred blushed. “Well, the economy has been bad…and you know what they say, the best gifts a handmade…and I know you like unicorns and your other imaginary creatures…and well…”
Arthur simply stared at him. “You…made this? I didn’t even know you could sew.”
“Well,” Alfred said warmly, “I learned something from watching you sew all those years.”
Arthur blushed, and then remembered fondly of how little Alfred would watch him sew his clothes. Smiling, he put the box down, put on the mittens and hugged his boyfriend. “Thank you,” he whispered.
Alfred beamed and hugged Arthur back. They stayed like that for a minute or two before Alfred pulled back. “Okay, where’s my present?”
Arthur pretended to think. “Your present,” he said in a confused voice. When Alfred started to pout, Arthur chuckled and pulled something out of his bag. “Here you go, you idiot.”
Alfred grabbed it with excitement and began to rip of the rose colored wrapping paper like a child. He opened the box and froze. “Ar…Arthur!” He pulled out a long blanket, with the American flag printed on it. On the bottom corner it said “With love, from England.” “Did you make this?”
Arthur blushed. “Well…this was going to be my present last year but…and its winter here so I figured you would want to keep warm. It’s just …and that’s not all.”
Alfred, confused, looked back in the box and gasped. Inside were two little wooden soldiers, each one wearing an American and British uniform respectively. “You…” Alfred started to say.
Arthur sighed, memories from a long time ago coming back, before looking down. “Happy Christmas, Alfred,” he replied softly.
Before he knew what was happening, Arthur was engulfed in a big hug. “I love this,” Alfred cried, holding Arthur and the soldiers closer, “I love all of this, and I love you so much!”
Arthur felt a few tears coming, before hugging back. “I love you too, git.”
Alfred pulled back, smiling with his own tears, before pressing his lips against Arthur’s. Arthur immediately kissed back, and the two kissed slowly. Alfred gently put the soldiers down as the couple moved their lips together. Breaking apart, they stayed close gazing at each other. Alfred smiled warmly, remembering how different this was to how Christmas had ended the year before.
“Merry Christmas Artie!”
“Hm…oh yes, Merry Christmas.”
“Arthur…are you drunk?”
“Why should you care?! You’ve never cared before!”
“But Arthur…”
“Just leave me alone. I hate this holiday. I’m going home, goodnight America.”
Arthur sighed, remembering the same thing. Before, he had had no one to spend it with, other than go to Alfred’s crazy parties and/or get drunk with Francis. The morning after was as miserable. But now…
“Merry Christmas Arthur,” Alfred said sweetly, pulling the hand sewn blanket around them.
“Happy Christmas to you too, love,” Arthur said back, cuddling back against him as the clock struck midnight.
It was here that Santa Tino found them later that night, fast asleep with the little wooden soldiers watching over them.
Happy Holidays!!!
