I don't have much of an update on my sculpt this time. I just added a few straps and things anyway. What I'm going to blabber on about instead is a crazy thought I've been having since I started this project.
Are you ready? I want to start a business selling these things. Yes, I've even considered talking to Nintendo about selling Zelda ones, should I manage to produce a decent range. Of course, these are only for my own amusement for now. Casting is a rather expensive process. Here's an example:
A circular mould of about 9-11" wide can hold about 16 25mm scale (1/64) miniatures, if they're placed properly. The Master Mould, which gives a perfect reproduction of the original sculpts, costs around £50 to make. These are only used to make the "first generation", so to speak, of the minis. They can be used for a few castings, but aren't much use for any more than that. No, a more serious seller would have to make Production Moulds (made from the product of the Master Mould), which cost £35. These usually last up to 150 or so castings, and are used until destruction.
In other words, I'd be paying £85 to get a range of 16 minis up and running, and that's before I have to pay for materials.
So you can see the problem. I need to find something people will buy, but I don't want it to feel like sculpting is a chore, so I need a comprimise. Zelda would be a dream come true. I'm probably going to sculpt pretty much everything encountered in Ocarina Of Time, if only for myself. If I'm allowed to sell them, I'd be immensely surprised and overjoyed.
However, a more realistic bet is choosing an uncopyrighted range. Now I COULD make up my own, but I'm not so imaginitive in that respect. Or, as I was thinking, I could go down the historical route. Due to playing a wee bit of Rome: Total War this week, that sort of thing had been on my mind. Thing is, I'd need to make something mind-blowing, since that area has probably been done to death.
Anyway, I'll leave it at that, so I can still have time to watch an episode of Samurai Pizza Cats before bed.
Take care everyone.
