Title: Duty
Author: LaughtersMelody
Rating: PG
Fandom: Person of Interest
Disclaimer: It's not mine, but I'll take Reese if no one wants him.
Genre: Angst
Pairing: N/A
Type: One-shot
Spoilers: No real spoilers, though there are references to information revealed in "Number Crunch" 1.10 and "Blue Code" 1.15.
Characters: John Reese
Secondary Characters: Cara Stanton
Summary: The best lies have some truth in them. Snow lied about the details, but he hadn't lied about the identity of Cara Stanton's killer: John Reese. Pre-series speculation, now AU since "Matsya Nyaya" 1.20 aired.

A/N: This was inspired by Snow's confrontation with Carter in "Blue Code," when he mentions Reese's killing of his old partner/handler, Cara Stanton. I don't trust Snow at all, but I couldn't help thinking that it wouldn't have surprised me if Reese did kill Stanton - just not quite the way Snow has implied that he did.

As always, I thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for His incredible mercy and grace.

Duty

2010

Stanton isn't surprised when Reese draws his gun and points it at her head.
"I had a feeling it would be you," she smiles.

If it were anyone else, the smile would seem strange, but he's learned over the years that it's simply her way. Reese, a quiet man by nature, embraces silence, but Cara…she smiles, like she can't help but be amused.

He's often wondered if she really finds the world - their world - as funny as she pretends to.

Reese, for his part, doesn't see the humor in it, not now. He hadn't believed Snow when he'd said that she was a traitor, that she was the leak they'd spent the last couple weeks searching for.

Then, he'd followed her and seen it for himself.

He'd waited to confront her until he was sure that she wasn't armed.

She's still dangerous, of course, but as good as she is, she can't outrun a bullet, and he won't miss.

"Why?" he asks, the gun never wavering. "Why did you do it?"

She sighs, not answering right away, and when she purses her lips, he thinks of all the kisses they shared on that assignment a few months ago, when they'd played the part of a married couple.

She folds her arms over her chest and leans against the wall. "I'm tired, John," she says finally. "And you and I both know there's only one way out."

He does know it. There's no retirement for people like them.

She'd let herself be caught. Wanted to be caught.

That doesn't make this any easier.

She's not his friend. Their line of work doesn't allow for that. She'd said it herself, many times: friendship, sentimentality, is a weakness. Still, friend or not, he doesn't want to kill her.

But, he has his orders, his duty.

She's left him no choice.

"I'm sorry," he tells her.

She shrugs. "Don't be."

And even when he pulls the trigger, she's smiling.
