Flying
Sheppard has always known he’d die in battle. It’s never been something he could explain, just a gut feeling.
He’s always trusted his gut.
So, when the impact of a bullet throws him back into the dirt, he’s not really surprised. If anything, he’s more surprised that it hadn’t happened sooner.
The pain doesn’t hit immediately. It’s more of a pressure at first, a sharp, steady pressure that makes it hard to breathe.
The noise of the battle raging around him fades away, and he blinks up at the alien sky above.
Perfect weather for flying, he thinks.
Teyla blocks the view a moment later. She rips open a field dressing and presses it to his chest. The pain awakens and John gives a choked cry, the sound thick with the blood welling in his throat.
Teyla says something but he can’t hear her. Rodney’s there a second later, blue eyes wide, panicked. John can’t hear him either, but he can tell that Rodney is yelling. A minute after that, John can feel the ground vibrating with heavy footsteps, and then Ronon is crouching down beside him. When Ronon looks at John’s chest, his expression turns grim.
If John didn’t already know how bad it is, that would have told him.
The pain dulls again, numbness returning, despite the pressure Teyla is putting on the wound. He wishes he could say something, but he can’t find the energy to form words.
Distantly, he feels someone holding his hand. He’s not sure who it is, but it doesn’t matter. His team’s here. They’re okay, even if he’s not.
And when he closes his eyes, he’s flying.
