1. When John F. Kennedy was shot (November 22, 1963)
My mom was only 4...I wasn't even a thought.
2. When Mt. St. Helens blew (May 18, 1980)
I was in womb...due in two months.
3. When the space shuttle Challenger exploded (January 28, 1986)
I was six years old. I only remember my mom saying that something bad had happened to a space ship, but I certainly didn't understand what had happened. I did know that a teacher had died in the crash, they told us that at school.
4. When the 7.1 earthquake hit San Francisco (October 7, 1989)
I was 9, but I don't really remember anything about it.
5. When the Berlin Wall fell (November 7, 1989)
Again, I was 9. I remember my parents watching the news coverage on tv and I remember famous people being there. Other than that, I really didn't understand the significance of the situation.
6. When the Gulf War began (January 16, 1991)
I was 10 years old at the time and my parents had just gotten divorced. I had a lot more personal things going on. I don't really remember much about the beginning.
7. When the first World Trade Center bombing happened (February 26, 1993) I was 13 years old. I faintly remember watching something about it on tv at school. All of our classrooms had tvs in them. I don't really remember much about it other than that.
8. When OJ Simpson was chased in his White Bronco (June 17, 1994)
I was almost 14 years old, my grandfather had just died. I stayed with my granda a lot at that time. She had the tv on watching the situation unfold. I remember thinking he was stupid for running, that he would be in a lot bigger trouble now for running.
9. When the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City was bombed (April 19, 1995)
I was almost 15 years old. Again, I was at my grandma's house. She was watching all that happened. We had the tv on all afternoon. I remember watching people and those search dogs go in and try to find people. I remember thinking how terrible it was.
10. When Princess Di was killed (August 31, 1997)
I told you I spent a lot of time at my grandma's house. That's where I was went I heard about this too. I was 17 years old. I don't really remember hearing about the princess dying, but we did stay up really late the day of the funeral to watch it.
11. When Bush was first announced President (November 7, 2000)
I was 20 years old. I was a junior in college, living on campus. I was having a bad night and I couldn't sleep. My roommate was already asleep so I went down into the dorm lounge to watch the election stuff. I was just writing in my journal thinking about everything. I hadn't voted, I wasn't registered. (I'm still not) I wrote this: "At 1:15am George W. bush was elected President of the United States. I'm disappointed." I did not want someone so straight laced running our country.
12. When the 6.8 earthquake hit Nisqually, WA (February 28, 2001)
I was 20. I remember nothing about this.
13. When terrorists destroyed the World Trade Center (September 11, 2001)
I woke up that morning and like any other morning, I got ready for class. I decided to check livejournal before going to class because I had a few minutes. I opened it to read Lace's post..something about the world ending and a plane had crashed into the world trade center. So I turn on the tv just in time to see the second plane crash. One was an American Airlines plane. I hear that all air traffic has shut down. This directly impacts me since that's the company I work for. My roommate, John and I continue to go to class, I called my mom on the way. She was driving and hadn't known. We were scared. I was sure class would be cancelled. It wasn't. I had to go, I didn't pay attention, but I went. That was the longest hour of my life. As soon as I got out of class, I called work. I had to what was going on. Everyone was there, they were just watching tv in horror. One of the flight attendants that lives in Evansville regularly flew that the route of that AA flight. They didn't know if he was on there. I asked what I could do. They said nothing right now. They had no idea when the airport would reopen. Shortly after that they were sent home as all airports were closed to everyone. I will never forget anything about that day, as long as I live.
14. When Columbia disintegrated during re-entry over Texas. (February 1, 2003)
I was at work at the airport. I was flipping through the four channels to find something to watch cuz we weren't busy at all. I saw the first flash of the special report come up. I remember the news anchor saying that NASA had lost radio contact with the shuttle and that they feared something had happened. I kept an eye on the tv...until we finally saw the parts coming down. I remember there was not a tv in the secured area at the airport at that time. There was a couple there, they had no idea of what was going on. I had told them when I heard that they had lost contact with the ship. I finally went back to tell them about what happened. We were just shocked. We thought the space shuttle was a sure thing, we were wrong.
