I moved to Colorado Springs, and started work in May. My official title is "Special Investigator for the United States Office of Personnel Management." However, everyone thinks I work for the FBI. I have a badge and credentials like what FBI carry so I guess it's a common mistake. I do background checks for the government so that people can receive their security clearance. I've gotten to go to all sorts of cool places - for instance the joint Canadian-American counterterrorism "war room" where they keep track of threats and plan how to respond in the event of another terrorist attack. At least I think that's what they do there - I'm not positive. Halfway through the interview, the lady asked "what clearance do you have?" Turns out, I didn't have sufficient clearance to be there - oops! I've also been to one of the buildings where they process satellite reconnaissance. While I was there, I noticed there were flashing red lights mounted on the ceiling. I asked what the lights were for and was informed that they were flashing because I was in the building. Whenever an "outsider" - someone who doesn't work there - comes in, they turn on the lights and any classified info has to be put away.
I've also had a couple mishaps. The funniest happened last week. I had been on base to conduct an interview and accidentally left my badge behind. I didn't realize until after I had left the base. I called the office where I had had the interview, but the guy who I had interviewed had stepped out. The person I spoke to said he would call up to the gate and let them know what had happened. However, when I got to the gate, they didn't have a clue what I was talking about... AND, I couldn't get on base because I didn't have my badge. It was a classic catch-22 - I needed to get on base to get my badge, but couldn't get on base without my badge. I was finally able to get in touch with the person who I had interviewed and he brought my badge out to me on his way home. Let me tell you - I'm ALWAYS going to remember to check and make sure I have my badge with me before I leave base now!
That's enough for now - stay tuned for more funny stories in the future. LE
