I am constantly surprised by people even though I would think I should be immune by now. There is a Virginian senator who is trying to get rid of Planned Parenthood funding because he believes that God gives women who have abortions disabled kids as a punishment! Really?? And yet I have seen Christians who have believed that they were given a special needs child because they had enough love and strength to bear up under the difficulties and in return have been blessed. This just can't end well for a party that is already fragmenting. Religious extremism in any form and politics just makes for a bad mix. Christianity is supposed to be a path of love, led by a God of love that adores children. And it has people like this in it in a position of power to do harm to them and to their families.
I'll pin this one up next to Cynthia Davis who believes that poor children should miss meals. "Davis attacked programs providing subsidized meals for school-age children from lower-income families during the summer months, claiming that such programs "could break apart more families" and asserting that "Hunger can be a positive motivator."-Wikipedia Y-e-a-h. Said by a woman who looks like she's never truly faced hunger or the possibility of long-term hunger in her life. I'm sure stunting the growth of children will help them "focus". I'm with Stephen Colbert on this one. If you ever meet her in a restaurant, support her by knocking the food from her hand. :D
Oh-and yes, I do actually feel much better still. Have been feeling more peaceful and tranquil for the past 4 days. Did some calls on the dentist issue and am still okay for once. (It would upset me and ruin my day normally.) Now that doesn't change my acerbic tongue when dealing with fools, but I'm not actually frothing. I'm just slightly horrified that the legislators, who get to vote for their own raises, who cheerfully put US in debt for their inability to spend only what is available that year from taxes, has finally stopped caring about the next generation all together. I guess it is more honest than them saying, "Children are our future" and then turning around and slashing education and after school programs. Ah well. I'm blessed to be around 2 sets of parents who love their children and are producing confident, well-adjusted future adults. Maybe they will help change things in the future. Later!
http://www.newsleader.com/article/20100222/NEWS01/2220318 RICHMOND - State Delegate Bob Marshall of Manassas says disabled children are God's punishment to women who have aborted their first pregnancy. He made that statement Thursday at a press conference to oppose state funding for Planned Parenthood.
"The number of children who are born subsequent to a first abortion with handicaps has increased dramatically. Why? Because when you abort the first born of any, nature takes its vengeance on the subsequent children," said Marshall, a Republican.
"In the Old Testament, the first born of every being, animal and man, was dedicated to the Lord. There's a special punishment Christians would suggest."
Marshall was among more than 20 people, mostly Christian pastors and clergy, who gathered for the press conference in the General Assembly Building.
They called on Virginia officials to eliminate state funding for Planned Parenthood because the organization provides abortions.
"We are gathered this afternoon to draw attention to the unethical, immoral and racist practices of the largest abortion provider in America," said Dean Nelson, executive director of the Network of Politically Active Christians.
Delegate Brenda Pogge, R-Williamsburg, has joined Marshall in co-sponsoring a budget amendment to eliminate state funding for Planned Parenthood.
"I think that the reason it's gone on so long is that most people don't have a clue what's being paid for by taxpayer dollars," Pogge said.
The press conference was held by a group called Virginia Christian Action. Its members presented a petition calling on Gov. Bob McDonnell, Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling and Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli to stop funding for Planned Parenthood. All three top officials are Republican.
The petition was signed by a number of prominent Christian leaders, including the Rev. Jonathan Falwell of Lynchburg and the Rev. Pat Robertson of Virginia Beach.
McDonnell has publicly supported calls to cut off funding for Planned Parenthood. His predecessor, Democrat Tim Kaine, supported funding for Planned Parenthood.
