Remember how I was lamenting about there not being any good fantasy shows/movies out lately...or at least very few? Well...I've been following George R.R. Martin's blog on LJ about HBO putting together the cast for his "Song of Fire and Ice" series of which the first book (and the show/mini-series) is called "A Game of Thrones".
I know the source material is good and as politically twisty as you could wish and LOTS of battle scenes and LOOOOOOTS of deaths, and a decent dose of fantasy creations and critters thrown in. (Ever walk a wall of ice? How would you like to be stationed at one as the last/first line of defense?)
But NOW they are assembling a kick-butt cast! Sean Bean will take on the role of Ned Stark...which kinda fits right in line with his roles as 006, Boromir, and Errol Partridge. (I didn't know he had a voice role in Elder Scrolls: Oblivion.) Now Lena Headey from 300 will be cast as Cersei Lannister along with Nikolaj as her brother Jamie Lannister. Jamie is rather a bad boy who has a change of heart and the fan video put together for him shows he can carry that just as well as Lena can handle a strong female role. I can't call anyone a "lead" character although there tends to be about 7 major ones being followed at any given time. A Game of Thrones is like a fantasy version of a horror film. Large cast and you KNOW everyone isn't making it to the end.
But George weaves a great tale. And you will become drawn to a character and follow its rise even as another one falls. So if you have been waiting like me for something impressive, well, it looks like this will be it. HBO tends to fund its shows pretty well. And on top of blood there will be sex. (And Dany's character got her age boosted up to make that more acceptable since she was a child-bride in the books.) So if you are squeamish about blood or uncomfortable seeing sex on screen, be warned. But the story! Ohhh, what a tangled web it is! And then...the dragons come. And the giants. And the mammoths. Oh yes, there will be dire wolves and dark portents! Kingdoms clashing and knights both true and false will take to the screen to embroil you in a plot as twisted as Lost...but the pages are already written and you can see where all the threads lead...
Anyway, enjoy the fan video. The actor clearly has the ability to switch up moods and roles. I'm sure we are in for a real treat with this series!!
