Epic Video Game!!

Look what George R. R. Martin had to say in his post today!! *dance, dance*

"For years now fans of my epic fantasy series A Song of Ice & Fire have been writing and emailing me to suggest... ask... beg for the books to be made into a videogame. I'm thrilled to be able to announce that, at long last, those requests are being answered. Cyanide Studios, an independent videogame developer based in Nanterre, France, has acquired an exclusive option to develop Ice & Fire as both an RTS (Real Time Strategy) and RPG videogame for next generation consoles and PC.

Cyanide will begin development immediately, with an eye toward rolling out the games for release in the summer of 2011."

The Song of Ice and Fire series is powerful and gritty. It has a good slice of the horror of war and how many lives are hit. Political machinations, a variety of cultures and beliefs, and a strange and difficult backdrop of a world where winters can last decades shape the characters. The series is set at the end of a "long summer" where things have been prosperous and the youngest generation have never experienced a "real" winter.

And then our short-sighted human nature comes into play. War erupts just when everyone should be gathering in their resources to deal with one of these mini-ice-ages. And as ever, war destroys far more than it captures. No one is safe, and George R. R. Martin will have you on the edge of your seat wondering if anyone will survive the threat of winter once they survive the threat of men. And that is just the books.

Oh heck, why don't I just show you a sample of the art via a fan video.

The possibility of not one but TWO video games based off this very rich and complex world is wonderful! A tactics game from a war that would not only mke Vlad Tepes proud but also involves monsters and supernatural creatures from beyond a wall of ice? Oooooooohhhh.

Then even better, an RPG in a fantasy setting where there is magic hiding but no easy "health potions" and definitely no magic flutes? Will we be taking on the role of a major character or a member of one of the great households? Will we be mercenaries hired to fight in this war or maybe even an outcast serving on the Wall? So much potential here!! So keep your eyes open. There are a good few books that could make equally good video games out there. If a good engine is used we could have the chance to see video game storylines start to equal the level of eye candy. I'm looking forward to it!!
