I could do my music homework....or I could write about what a fucking awesome weekend I had. TOUGH CHOICE. LET'S DO IT.
-Friday morning, went to the Pucker Gallery in Boston with my USEM to see an exhibit about Samuel Bak.
You can see what paintings were in the exhibit here, but it's a pdf file. The exhibit was fantastic. I love Bak's style because it's a bit surreal, but our extremely knowledgeable guide was able to break apart and interpret each painting deftly. The still....lifes? lives? were awesome because they're not the stereotypical nineteenth century still lifes; they're set outside and often have word-clues worked into them. We also saw a part of the gallery exhibiting Bak's interpretation of creation. It was amazing. If anyone in the Boston area wants to check it out, I would gladly go back.
-Public transportation was a breeze. Alison, my writing seminar teacher, walked me from the gallery to a T stop and answered my last-minute questions. I then took the T to South Station, got on the 11:00 Fung Wah to NYC with time to spare, and had a peaceful ride. Dad picked me up in Chinatown. Smooth as buttah!
-Basically all I ate in my house this weekend was Chinese food. DELICIOUS MUCH?
-My parents bought me dried apples when they were still in Massachusetts because Hannaford's didn't have any when we went, and they saved these dried apples for me! What a treat to find in my room upon my return!
-I have a puppy! ADORABLE.
-went to see Plaza Suite at PV and was quite pleasantly surprised. Of course I knew my wife would be fabulous, but I was really shocked by Mike Gen. So quiet! So shy! So docile! and then he goes and plays an uncaring businessman very well.....I had no idea he could do that! way to be majorly attractive, Mike! Way to be!
-of course, I had forgotten that Joe had called John Howard and told him that I broke up with my "boyfriend." Actually, I had forgotten that John Howard existed until I saw him in a crowd and said to myself, "Oh no." Amanda and I tried to evade him, but in my efforts to say hello to Mama Gibby he tracked me down. He hugged me and said how good it was to see me several times. He also gave me his phone number which I ripped up in Allison's house a few hours later.
I have to say, it does make me appreciative of annoying!guys at Bdeis...at least they're just socially awkward, rather than being ACTUALLY SCARY AND SADISTIC like John Howard.
-afterwards, Amanda and I cruised by VHS to see if that night's Crucible was over. We got there just as the show got out, so we went in to say hi to everyone. I was promptly crushed by beloved high school friends (Jenna let out an ear-splitting banshee yell upon seeing me). I felt so, so loved and it was so wonderful to see everyone. Of course, Amanda and I crashed that night's short cast party. Afterwards, I went to Allison's until 1:30 am because while not actually one of my wives, she is the love of my life and I love talking to her. I LOVE IT.
-I have to say, while I adore my Bdeis friends, they could use some hug lessons from my NJ ducks. I mean, first of all, they don't hug enough (though Cat and I did pretty well in quantity at tonight's Seuss rehearsal). But NJ kids just....GET how to give a proper bone-crushing, love-emitting hug. Of course, there is the Ryan Special, which possibly only Katie Lip can match, but KK, Allison, Jess, etc, are also seriously good huggers.
-Saturday I saw Alice in Wonderland at Studio in the afternoon. The concept was interesting, especially for a kid's show, but some of the talent could have been better. Andrea was a marvelous Mock Turtle, though.
-It felt really good to touch a piano again, even though I'm obvious crap. But it made me really want my keyboard, just to have. I got spoiled from years of just being able to wander into the living room and sit at the piano...I need to have one of its cousins around.
-Found out JESS was in town for the weekend as well, so I picked her up to go to The Crucible with me. It felt just like old times - driving to her house in the dark, being late, putting on my makeup in the car, her alternate persona of DJ Jess von Schweigenase controlling Percy the meZen, etc. We then met up with Amanda, Alli, and 485739487 other people. Saw more lovelies, like Devon and Hayley (who managed to accidentally hit me in my bad toe as we hug-collided).
-Afterwards, the ultimate hometown experience: PILGRIM!!! Brandeis seriously needs a diner. Sat at a massive table, saw random people, ate delicious breakfast food. It was marvelous. !
-had some sketchy times with Andrea, then talked to Cat online until the wee hours of the morning.
HOORAY FRIENDS
-Ryan & his dad might be in town for Seussical, which would be nine thousand kinds of AMAZING especially because then he could teach Bdeis kids how to hug like they mean it.
-Allison up here in two weekends; I am so excited like I cannot even describe
-Tech week begins! Today we got our Seuss sweatshirts, which we have to wear for the entire week. HURRAY FOR SMELLY DIRTY CLOTHING!
-just saw Marti in the hallway (yes, I did just type hallyway) just saw Marti in the hallyway; she said we now have RBG rehearsal thrice a week...HALLELUJAH. and after this week I'll actually be able to go!!
-my room is an icebox
-but seriously, I love Hell Week. Sometimes you want to die; you always want to collapse, but it always pumps me up to maximum, well, not efficiency, but intensity. we're taking care of business, mothafuckahssssss.
in other news, the sooner I play Fosca, the better. because it will happen, and it will probably be one of the most cathartic experiences of my life. even pretending to play Fosca is a catharsis.
Dear NJ friends,
I love & miss you.
.....Love, Elana
