Oy with the Poodles Already!

Actual telephone conversation I had at work today:

Member on phone: Hi, I just had someone from there call my cell phone but I don't know why.

Me: Are you a member? Are you expecting a delivery?

Them: Yeah, I'm a member. And I'm supposed to be getting some stuff soon, but I don't know if it's here yet or not.

Me: Okay, let me just check with the warehouse. [realize Warehouse is on the other line] I'm sorry, they're on the phone at the moment, can I have your last name and I'll check the computer and see if anything is here for you?

Them: No, it's okay, I'll just listen to the message they left. Thanks!

[He hangs up. I stare at the phone for a moment, contemplate beating my head on the desk and worry about People.]

Also, a note about the Do Not Call list that everyone's so very jazzed about: The updated list is only made available to companies every 31 days. It actually mentions this on the website, but not everyone reads things. What it means is, even if you've put your name on the list, you may still receive some calls until the list is updated and your name is removed. I learned this AFTER having a cranky old man verbally lash me after he received a call from our marketing team. I tried to explain to him that it does take time for the lists to be updated (which, I didn't know the timeline but was quite certain these things aren't instantaneous), but he was really only interested in talking loudly over me and implying that I (personally) was in danger of being fined. Did I mention I'm not part of the marketing team and wasn't the one who made the call? Anyway, I thanked him for calling and told him I would make sure his name was immediately removed. He launched into another diatribe which I politely hung up on. I also strongly considered keeping a copy of the number and crank calling him at 4am from payphones for the next few months. I didn't, but I really kinda wanted to.

But I digress. My point is: having your name on the Do Not Call list does not mean that all calls will cease immediately. And if you do receive a call within 30 days of removing yourself from the list, please refrain from freaking out at the poor soul on the phone. It's not their fault. It's just their job. And sometimes, it isn't even their job, they're just the poor fool who gets stuck answering the phone.

(p.s. bonus points if you recognize the title of this post!)
