i have a confession to make. every year about a week before and leading up to july 4, i get a little annoyed. it's a bad reason, one that really only serves to make me look haughty towards people who are actually doing a good thing, but, here it is, i get annoyed by people who run the peachtree road race. i'm sort of a hypocrite in that way because i've run the race twice, but the amount of attention that race gets is unbelievable. i don't like how everyone's like "wow! you're running the peachtree! are you really going to run/walk/drink beer for 6 MILES!!!!!1!" by this point, most of you reading this probably don't agree with me. 6 miles is pretty far. i don't know a whole lot of people who can run 6 miles, so of course it's a big deal. i guess i'm just a little numb about 6 miles.
what really gave me the idea to rant about something as harmless (actually, it's... healthful?) as the peachtree happened today in physics lab when, near the end, my TA was talking about the race and how people are crazy to run it and this girl in the back pointed to her lab partner and yelled out, "He's running it!" and there was this collective gasp around the room. a peachtree runner? here, in this room? with us? WOW!
maybe what makes me bitter is that i'm not running the race this year and i'm just jealous towards those who are. more likely, i just wish i got that kind of attention when i run the Cobb 10k, or the nashville half, or the atlanta thanksgiving half. that's really all this is about. next time i'm running a race, i want someone to be like "He's running it!" but that's the problem. no one else knows of any other races besides the peachtree. it's too damn popular. knock it off.
