i was reading in the news about how people are mad at walmart for dropping the "merry christmas" in their advertisements and switching to "happy holidays" to avoid offending people. at first, i was mad at how our society is paranoid of offending anyone for any reason. the more i've been thinking about it, though, the more i think it's a good thing that all the companies in america are moving away from saying "christmas" in anything. anyone from 100 years ago wouldn't recognize what we call "christmas" anymore because our christmas is just an excuse to spend lots of money at lots of stores for lots of people. i don't think half the people who are out at the malls are thinking about how christmas is about celebrating the birth of Christ. they're more concerned about what to get each other and about what they put on their christmas list. what i'm getting at is that i'm glad that giving and receiving presents be more closely related to the "holidays" than "christmas." i like how when i'm at church christmas means what it originally meant. i like how i get excited for christmas because it means midnight mass and singing o holy night and looking at the manger. basically i'm saying that i don't want to share the word "christmas" with people who only get a warm fuzzy feeling when they think of the xbox 360 they're getting on december 25. and i don't want to share it with colin either.
