"Tears of a Vulcan"
Spock watched the numbers on the life monitor above Uhura’s bed as they continued their descent. The disease had been slow and brutal, changing Uhura into a weak and frail woman right before his eyes. Now, all Spock could do was sit and watch as the numbers bottomed out and alarms began to sound… the last words she’d said to him still ringing in his ears, “Live long and prosper, my adun*.”
She must have known he needed to hear those words because, without her, living long was the last thing he wanted to do. But then, Uhura did always know what he needed to hear. She could read him like no one else could; knew him like no one else.
Spock watched as his love passed from life to death, a finality that even logic could not have prepared him for.
McCoy approached the bed slowly and began to unhook the monitor as Spock stood stiffly, swaying slightly from lack of sleep.
“Spock…” McCoy called out, sorrow and comfort in his voice, but Spock did not turn. Instead, he made his way to the bathroom off of sickbay.
As a doctor, McCoy had been prepared for this moment since Uhura told him not to take extreme measures. What he was not prepared for were the sudden moans of agony echoing from the bathroom.
Walls couldn’t muffle a sound like that. It sent chills straight to his bones.
