A Compromise That Promotes The Status Quo

A point of view of this never ending situation; it has to be said that it doesn't consider people's freedom of living wherever they want...and i don't feel like affordable housing is what the great majority of the homeless people in La is dreaming...
From la's homeless blog

(...)The City of Los Angeles has made a deal with the ACLU to allow people who are homeless to sleep on the streets between 9 pm to 6 am. In exchange, the city will commit to building 1,250 affordable housing units.

I actually think this basically promotes the status quo-letting people who are homeless stay homeless.

For one, the City of Los Angeles is already making plans and funding commitments to build affordable housing. So even if this agreement was not made, the city would be building units.

Two, it will take years for these housing units to be built. In the meantime, these people will still languish on the streets. In fact, is there a commitment that the people on the streets will have priority into these housing units?

Three, there is no immediate solution for people on the streets now. No commitment to provide a safe bed for them now.

Four, when the 1,250 units are scheduled to be on line, most of the political leaders who made the commitment will be either termed out, or will be in other political offices. So who says that this commitment to build 1,250 units will stick?

Allowing people to continue to sleep on the streets is not a good compromise. Homelessness hurts all sectors of our community. The only real solution is to provide enough shelter beds for people, until we can build enough permanent housing for them (...)
