My Problem with "I love you"

What is your Pet peeve?

I never thought I fell into the category of people that had a particular pet peeve. I mean, things that bothered me, sure, but everyone has things that bother them. However, lately there's this one thing that happens to get on my very last nerve, and I'm guessing that is why it has stuck out so vividly from the rest of the daily nuisances we all encounter.

It affects me tremendously when people use the phrase "I love you", as common as they use "hello" or "how are you?". I mean, don't get me wrong, those of you who know me, who are reading this, know that I often say I love you, but I never say it just to occupy space. I mean... in the capacity I've heard it or read it lately really bothers me.

I just feel it's being used frivolously. It seems that "I love you" is being tossed around, and has lost some of its value. I know when people who use it so frequently say it to me... it seems almost fake and insincere. I think it's wrong that after seeing someone twice in your entire life, you decide they're your new favorite, and automatically, "I love you" is being injected, aside from which, it's very one-sided. I wonder if that other party feels as I do, that it's not real, that it couldn't possibly be, I'll have to begin asking. I wonder if they're thinking, "Hey, you're cool, but umm.... I don't love you, how could you love me just because you think I'm _______ ??(fill in your adjective of choice here).

How can you tell someone you love them, when you haven't ever gotten to know them? It's almost like you love the idea of loving them. How can you love someone who you've never really had ONE solid conversation with?

It's just a lack of sincerity. When you start telling every person you think is cute, or fun, or sweet, or amazing, that you love them, it gets old, the feeling behind what love is supposed to represent gets lost... I see right through it, I wonder if others are beginning to catch on.
