Top News Dakota Fanning, left, and Queen Latifah star in 'The Secret Life of Bees,' announced as the opening-night feature of the New Orleans Film Festival.
The New Orleans Film Festival doesn't select an official theme from year to year, but -- as with most film festivals -- one always seems to emerge as the annual event takes shape. This year, the prevailing theme is . . . themes.
"I would say there is more than one theme," film society Executive Director Ali Duffey said of this year's lineup, unveiled Thursday. "There are three -- no, there are four: music movies, women in films, European films and documentaries."
And that's on top of all the Louisiana-oriented films and panel discussions that are planned.
Probably the most high-profile film in the bunch -- and the October festival's opening-night feature -- is the Fox Searchlight feature "The Secret Life of Bees," based on the best-selling novel by Sue Monk Kidd, and starring Queen Latifah, Dakota Fanning, Alicia Keys and Jennifer Hudson. It opens in wide release Oct. 17, a week after its New Orleans Film Festival appearance.
"The Secret Life of Bees" -- which fits Duffey's "women in films" theme -- will be followed on opening night by a European film (the British dramatic comedy "
Happy-Go-Lucky") and a music documentary ("
Nerdcore for Life").
