I think I have a disease in which I cannot enjoy canon ships.
Just finished S2 of Downton and the entire time I kept thinking "My God when are we going to get Gwen and her typewriter back on this screen these ships are so boooooring?!?"*
What I wanted in the first season was for Mary to quip her way sarcastically through the war and then run off to Paris to disgrace the family in some way with her boy cut and a torrid affair with another unsuitable lady or gentleman and for Sybil to run off to London to share a flat with Gwen and be BFF's forever and then Edith could somehow manage to pull a suitable marriage out of nowhere forcing both the Countesses Grantham to pull out their smelling salts and, yeah, none of that happened.
And why exactly was the forced-into-marriage plot pulled from Mary and shoved on to poor Daisy? Yes, I thought Mr. Mason adopting her as his daughter was sweet but weren't we all against the getting-married-to-make-other-people-happy plot way back when it involved the female romantic lead?
(Ok, so maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I do ship canon once in a while, because Gwen + Typewriter = Love. Oh, and Thomas + Dead, Blind Officer = Heartbreak. And I guess Carson + Mrs. Hughes makes me smile but the show hasn't been screaming: TRAGEDY! ROMANCE! over them, so I don't think they count as canon.)
