I was very, very sad to see
the news of Mildred Orton's death yesterday.
Who is Mildred Orton, you ask?
Mildred Orton is none other than the co-founder of my current favorite happy place, the
Vermont Country Store catalog. Maybe because I long to be my great-aunt Sissy and wear swim-caps covered with plastic flowers to the pool, I find I can't get enough of it. Where else can one order
electric typewriters,
pickled brussels sprouts,
Lemon Up shampoo and several varieties of "
Intimate Solutions" all at the same time? And yes, when summer comes 'round and the window A.C. unit isn't quite up to the job of de-stickifying the duplex, I covet one of their many
muumuus. I don't think I've derived this much enjoyment out of a piece of junk mail since the
Sears Wish Book was dropped on my parents' step every October.
So rest in peace Mildred, "purveyor of the practical and hard-to-find". You did good.
