I stumbled upon
this article about beards by the Bishop of London (who sports a beard himself).
It seems beards have been in and out of vogue over the centuries, both in religious and secular circles. It has led to religious artists imagining Jesus both with and without a beard (assuming Gillette's early models were available in first century Palestine). Of course it was Esau (Jacob's brother) who set the benchmark for hairiness in more ancient lore, no doubt an early pin-up for those with hirsute desires.
