Saw
The Waterboys this week with friends from Warwick. I'd bought the tickets expecting that it would be a typical show with a lot of the old hits, but discovered nearer to the time that it was to be a musical
presentation of the poems of Irishman W.B.Yeats. It was a smart modern seated venue but my expectations for the concert were not particularly high.
Frontman Mike Scott acknowledged our bravery in attending a performance of "probably more than two album's worth of music you have not heard before". There was a drunken cry from the balcony to "play the old ones", but Mike carried on with a varied succession of Celtic tinged folk, rock and blues, backed by an assortment from his talented nine piece band. It was a lot better than I had expected and indeed by the end of the main performance I was quite moved by it all. In the encores, Mike relented and played rousing performances of "Don't Bang The Drum" and "
The Whole of the Moon" from The Waterboys' 1980s heyday. The crowd (aside from the ejected heckler) left happy.
