ETYMOLOGY: French : joie, joy de, of vivre, to live, living.
white privilege, global warming, christian fundamentalists, oppression oppression oppression. maybe learning about the reality of the world's problems was something i wasn't entirely ready to face. trying to reconcile my societal position/economic status with the afflicted state of the majority of the human population just isn't going to work.
but the decision to lead a life of commitment doesn't have to entail walking around with the weight of the world on my shoulders. new knowledge should be empowering, not burdensome. guilt and asceticism aren't going to solve anything. and maybe maturity isn't about being serious all the time. i'm not going to pretend to know everything about being grown up, but i'd like to think it has more to do with self-awareness and accountability than anything else. "joie de vivre" is something about being young that i don't need to give up.
so here's to a new year.
