Author's Notes: Obligatory episode coda! I literally wrote this as the show ended, I'm pretty sure the credits were still rolling under my local news when I started this. It's my first ever H50 fic so I hope you enjoy it! No beta so please excuse any mistakes.
It was well past midnight when Steve staggered into his home. Danny, sitting on the couch, could tell he was not drunk but just tired. Steve had lost weight and had lost sleep since they rescued him and it never looked more apparent than in the low lamplight of the living room. Steve wordlessly walked up the stairs, seemingly ignoring Danny who waited five minutes before following his partner to find Steve sitting on the edge of the bed, staring at the wall next to the door and clad only in sweatpants.
“He walked away,” Steve said in a rough and broken voice as Danny sat beside him. “He just walked away.” He sounded stunned and tears shone in his eyes.
“What happened?” Danny asked quietly when Steve didn’t continue. All he knew was Steve had gone to talk to Joe when he suddenly burst into headquarters, grabbed a vest and ran back out, ignoring Danny as he called after him.
Steve now heaved a shaky sigh as he lowered his head into his hands. Danny’s hand automatically ran up and down his partner’s spine in soothing strokes.
“I knew Noshimuri had him, I found Joe’s keys in the door and his phone right there on the floor. So I went over there, I got him out at gunpoint. And I had every intent on driving him home. I was so...furious, so betrayed.” His voice broke near the end but he continued explaining in increasingly hurt and angered tones the argument that followed. Danny listened quietly, though his head was filling with a few choice arguments and well-placed punches he had for the older man.
“I was tortured for him!” Steve shouted, his head snapping up, eyes wet with tears as they stared at Danny. “Jenna died for him, I said goodbye to you-” he broke off, looking away, swallowing his tears and when he spoke again his voice was deadly calm. “I did all of that for him and he walked away from me like my pain, like your pain, like her life didn’t matter.”
Danny’s hand left Steve’s back and floated down to rest on top of his fists, clenched together in Steve’s lap. “It mattered,” the blonde man said gently. “Hey,” he prodded, forcing Steve to look back up. “It mattered. You helped Jenna find her fiancée and you came back to me. That’s what mattered. As for the rest,” he waved his free hand as though the sleepless nights and hair-raising screams emerging out of nightmares or the plates of untouched food were nothing. “You’re here with me and that’s all I need.”
“But Joe-”
“Joe kept secrets from you and doesn’t think you need to know why even though you’re knee-deep in it. He walked away from you-” Danny cut off at the harsh sob that escaped the other man before taking a breath and continued. “He walked away because he values whatever those secrets are more than you. He loved you like a son once, and maybe somehow he still does but he’s put those secrets above you.”
“I can’t do the same,” Steve whispered. “I can’t just walk away from him. He was like a father to me, he’s helped me.”
“Fine, then just….take a step back,” Danny answered. His hand squeezed Steve’s tighter.
“I don’t think I can,” Steve said with a sigh, stretching up from his position bent over his lap.
“Yeah I know,” Danny said lightly, “you’re too good of a man to leave behind anyone you care about. But that’s why I’m here, to be the voice of reason.”
“God help us all,” Steve teased. Danny let out a noise that was something between disbelief, laughter and protest but was glad to see some of the agony leave Steve’s face.
Another sleepless night greeted them that night but this time it was spent in a quiet reassurance.

Please let me know what you think! I feel iffy about the ending line, but I was a little unsure how to end it.
