Sarah was itching to get out, but unable to find enough strength to get up for more than a few moments--and those moments requite fierce concentration. For awhile, all she found do was lean on the cane as she studied the stars that streamed outside a long window.

She'd done well, despite her shitty diplomacy fuck up with the vampire.

And he was still an asshole.

Armand hated the infirmary. He entered it voluntarily only for friends, and Sarah was a friend. He'd heard how she'd been hurt, and felt a little guilty for it, since he'd thought that Lestat de Lioncourt might be a problem and had only spoken to Tony about it. Not preventative enough, and he'd forgotten to follow through. Hungry vampires made for pale, bloodless friends.

He moved easily between the beds though until he found Sarah near a window. "You must be feeling a bit better," he said by way of greeting, "if you're on your feet." Then he gave her bow, because that was what he did. He held a book clasped against his chest.

"Armand," she said, and made sure to turn very carefully since moving quickly was less of an option than she might have wanted. His voice was easy to determine even if she couldn't see him, as he'd really been the first person she'd met on the Barge (among other, but still).

"Yeah," Sarah said with a slightly amused expression. "Better. Exhausted, mostly, but determined to get back on my feet. You doing okay?" She knew she was pushing herself, but fuck it, it wasn't like the window was going to collapse under her weight.

"I know how you feel." Perhaps not exactly, but he knew vampires far too well. Her question, normal and friendly, threw him a little. It wasn't that people didn't ask that here, but he'd been asked seldom lately. He hesitated before answering, weighing politeness versus full honesty. Sarah was a friend, but she was still recovering.

"Well enough, I suppose. When one has an inmate, one is seldom bored." He hoped that didn't sound evasive. "Are you walking about a bit just now? I brought a book for you. I can leave it for later, if you like."

"Inmates," she said softly, "keep you on your toes." And sometimes kill you. Her knees were rubbery as it was and it took extra effort to make it to the bed even somewhat gracefully. "No more walking. I might fall on my face if I keep it up."

She was pretty fucking sure that if she hadn't sat back down, that was exactly what would have happened. Sarah peered at him, a slight tug of a smile curling at her lips.

"Which book?" she asked, genuinely interested.

Armand was torn between reaching out to take her arm as she struggled, and holding back to preserve her pride. To his relief, his help wasn't needed, though he took it upon himself to make certain her bedclothes weren't lumped too badly around her feet and lower legs. "I suppose I chose a good time to visit then. You must be tired after exercising."

He pulled a chair up close before answering about the book. He showed it to her as he did. "It's from my sister's collection. Candide by Voltaire. It's a didactic little work, but it does let us look for irrationality and injustice in the old world and our own. Would you like me to read it to you, or just leave it for you? I can find something more to your taste now that I've been by."

"Work keeps at bay three great evils: boredom, vice, and need," Sarah said softly--truthfully, it was one of the most quotable lines from the work. Most often used as well. It had been a long while since she'd read the book, a long time since that particular literature class. She tilted her head slightly and smiled.

"Voltaire was always interesting," she said with a wry grin as she sank back against the pillows. Christ. Would would have thought a few steps could make her feel like she'd just been punched by a Terminator? "Very astute. If you don't mind reading, I think I'd enjoy that."

Armand glanced quickly around to make sure she had water nearby. He wasn't about to fuss so much as to offer it to her, but he'd be glad to help if she asked. He thumbed to the first page of text in the book.

"I would be glad to entertain you for a while."

[And insert lots of Candide here...] His reading voice was a little more formal, and possibly his accent showed a bit more than in casual speech. But he tried to emote and give the myriad characters distinct voices.

"Just let me know when you've heard enough. It isn't a long book."

"I wouldn't mind listening to all of it if you're willing," Sarah said with a soft laugh. He could read the whole thing if he wanted. She enjoyed Voltaire and pretty much anything out there. If she hadn't been on the move so much, she would have brought more than the slim volumes she had tucked away between her tapes to John and the neatly store flashbangs. And the shotgun.

Armand's voice was soothing and entertaining all at once, which made listening no chore. She warded the drowsiness off by taking a few sips of cool water now and again.

Armand laughed a little in response. It made him happy to do something nice for a friend, and he had so few of them left on board these days. Then he cleared his throat and plunged on with his reading.

When he was done, he closed the book, and sat back a little in his chair. "I didn't want to wear you out with my visit, but I hope you enjoyed that."

"The visit was fine, Armand, and honestly, I couldn't have asked for more," Sarah said and meant it. "There is nothing that frustrates me more than being stuck in a bed when there are other things I could be doing."

"I understand. Last year I had a... friend who would break me out as soon as I was mostly just feeling tired." Armand shrugged, unapologetic about his dislike of the infirmary. "I don't like it much in here, and I can sleep just as well in my own bed."

"I hate hospitals." Sarah filled the sentence with sharpness and the haunted memories associated with Pescadero, the helplessness of sitting around while the world came closer and closer to burning.

"But," she conceded, "there are people here." And after being attacked and killed by a vampire, people were a good thing. The sentiment made her frown, but it was true. The more people who were around, the less chance the vampire would have for...doing it again.
