At least Paris wasn't the Barge. Sirius was waiting for the day the shadowy apparitions became Dementors. He was waiting to turn a corner and run smack into the ghost of his dead best mate. He hadn't been sleeping much since Azkaban, but it wasn't really Azkaban that was bothering him. He spent a lot of his time as Padfoot. It was easier that way.

He doubted he'd get away with that now. Not here in Paris, pretending he was going to bond with Snape of all people. He arrived at the designated meeting spot in his muggle clothing, his wand hidden away.

Severus wasn't planning to attempt to bond with Black; he simply wanted to make the attempt to find common ground and thus appear to be doing right by his inmate.

After six months in the Muggle world with Martha, and time before that in various ports like this one - and two decades as a spy - he had gotten the knack of dressing like a Muggle. Trousers, shirt, wool topcoat - all black, of course; while he somehow still managed to billow a bit, he otherwise looked quite average. Forgettable. Blending in wasn't a problem for him. He wondered how his cohorts were fairing - Lupin might have no problems, but Bellatrix and Lucius would probably stick out like sore thumbs.

At least Sirius had followed directions, he noted grimly. He approached the other man with resignation, knowing he was probably in rare form today. Halloween was closing in fast.

Sirius had been hoping for some bloody mess of a get-up that involved a loud-print shirt and denims. Of course, that was far too much to hope for. Snape looked, well, normal. Perhaps slightly old fashioned, but he would expect nothing less. He nodded as Snape approached. He reminded himself it was good to be off the Barge, and Snape undoubtedly wanted to spend time as little time with him as possible. He'd cut him loose sooner or later.

"Lupin discovered my intention to spend a perfunctory amount of time with you before foisting you off on him so I can manage a situation with your cousin," he said without returning the greeting - such as it was.

"He suggested I take you to a racecourse. However, I have had more than my fill of brushes with vehicular manslaughter. Barring that, I believe I have a better idea." He motioned for Black to follow him, an indication that he intended to explain why he was an hour late. "Come along."

"What situation?" Sirius frowned. Like he wanted to be babysat whilst his nutter cousin was out there doing Merlin knows what.

He grit his teeth and followed Snape, feeling much like a dog being bid to follow its master. Well, he supposed he was a dog, and whilst Snape would never be his master, the sooner he followed, the sooner their perfunctory time together could end.

As he led his inmate in the direction of the car park, he slipped his hands into the pockets of his cloak. Very casual in appearance, but his hand was clutching his wand nonetheless.

"Her magic. Her threats to my wife." He remained calm as he spoke, feeling rather generous in his willingness to explain the situation to Sirius. "She has said she has no intention of lashing out, but as you can imagine, I could likely throw her farther than I believe her. Martha, however, insists we leave off protecting her at the month's end."

"I know you're rather a fan of giving people back their magic, and I'm certainly not complaining about that, but don't you think there should be limits on what Bellatrix can and cannot do? At least to start with? I understand if you keep all her magic from her, she'd have it back the minute she leaves the Barge, but she shouldn't be able to do Unforgivables. That's obvious."

He gave a sidelong glance at Sirius, then nodded. "As with my recommendation regarding Lucius - and as was done with me - I intended to suggest she be prohibited from casting spells used to harm others."

He snorted, then added, "Unforgivables are not the most dangerous spells my lot can perform."

He veered off the footpath and into the car park, glancing back only slightly to ensure his inmate hadn't decided to make a break for it.

"I'm well aware of the sorts of spells your lot can perform. Unforgivables are rather boring when it comes right down to it." And he said nothing more on the matter, he merely pressed his lips together and followed Snape into the car park, wondering where they could possibly be going. Hopefully his Warden wasn't going to be stashing him in a boot for the duration of the Paris port.

Severus could have risen to the bait, but thought better of it. He stopped several spaces in and produced a key on an overlarge keyring.

In front of him was a large motorbike - a newer model, perhaps, but quite similar in appearance to the one Sirius had once owned.

"It's yours for three days." He held out the key to his inmate, looking more embarrassed and uncomfortable than expectant of gratitude.

Sirius stared, open-mouthed, at the motorbike. It was...beautiful. Enormous. Shiny. It looked someone had taken his motorbike and modernized it, making it even better. He blinked over at Snape and the extended key. "Seriously?" His voice came out in a bit of a squeak.

He glanced at Sirius, an eyebrow raised slightly - not in mocking, but polite curiosity. Or as polite as he could manage, at any rate. He didn't say anything, however. What was there to say? He had just hired a motorbike for his inmate (and enemy) for the weekend.

If he thought too much about it, he would hex himself.

Grinning, Sirius snatched the key out of Snape's hand, before he could change his mind. "This is brilliant. Thanks!" He immediately moved closer to the bike, inspecting it from one end to the other.

Far from changing his mind, he took a step back from the bike, out of the way, and slipped his empty hands into the pockets of his coat once more.

The thanks unnerved him. It sounded almost genuine. A part of him didn't want to look Sirius in the eye to find out, as though he was desperately clinging to his own hatred.

The other part of him - the part that had been battered enough by the Barge to realize he was too old to be carrying on schoolyard grudges - mumbled almost inaudibly, "You're welcome."

He was one big grin as he hopped up onto the bike and stuck the key into the ignition. Blimey, this brought back memories. Good ones, too, if he kept his wits about him and pushed those final days off into some sort of cupboard. He remembered when he first got the motorbike, and how daft Prongs had thought he was, until he flew over his house in the middle of the night honking the horn and singing at the top of his lungs.

His smile faded, but only for a split second. He started the engine and the bike roared to life. "I'll stay out of trouble," he shouted over the noise.
