Slater made sure he had a beer and some of that cheeseburger and sat in a corner. He is such a party-goer.

"Mr. Slater! Hello."

I'm sorry to have to tell you, Mr. Slater, but George likes you.

"Hello, George."

This bemuses Slater completely.

George has that effect on people.

"How are you this evening?"

"I'm just triffic, George. Just triffic."

George nods as if something sage has been said.

"It is a bit impossible to forget that this isn't an entirely happy occasion."

Slater peers into his glass. "Yeah."

"But I do think the Sergeant is touched, even if he's an appropriately humble man," George continues.

"Yeah, he's 'touched' all right," he replied, using touch in a 'nuts' sense of the word.

George takes that to be good-natured ribbing and grins.

"It takes a certain sort of mind."

George means: police work.

"Right," he replies without much enthusiasm. He knocks back some of his drink.
