In which they are attacked by raptors.batmanschmatmanJuly 17 2011, 03:41:23 UTC
Jurassic Park. Of course. Well, he'd tempted fate by saying none of the ports he'd been to were that bad, and it looked like the Admiral was upping the ante a little bit.
But he'd been through worse things before, and immediately, training and survival techniques had kicked in, and so far, they'd kept themselves alive and unhurt. They were making their way through the jungle, been careful about where they made camp, and Dick had even insisted on sleeping in a tree to avoid getting picked up by raptors - something he'd remembered from the first movie and decided to go with, based on his (admittedly relatively limited) knowledge of dinosaur biology.
Dick had been about to continue their current conversation when something caught his attention - a strange sort of noise coming from the trees to their left.
Jurassic Park. It wasn't as bad as the abandoned church filled with zombies, forced into groups with people he barely knew, but it wasn't exactly a piece of cake either. The place was dangerous, filled with obstacles, and he hadn't exactly meant to embark into jungle territory for fresh air. Yeah, he still appreciated the adventure to being in the barge, but he generally preferred something a little less carnivorous
( ... )
Dick immediately grabbed his sticks, taking in everything he could about the creature in the miliseconds he had before the thing decided to rip them apart. It watched them for a handful of seconds that nevertheless felt like a lifetime, gurgling quietly before barking out a strange call into the woods.
He had a fraction of a second to remember they were pack hunters before a response sounded from the woods and the first one leapt at him, mouth open and claws extended. Dick quickly darted to the side and slammed an escrima stick against the animal's ribs, putting as much force behind the blow as he could manage, probably cracking some ribs. The raptor let out a surprised shriek and staggered to the side.
The vigilante wanted to look over for Costigan, but he was also reluctant to look away from the raptor, and the creature had done what it wanted - there was now some considerable distance between the warden and inmate, and if one went down, the other could be circled and finished off easily.
Costigan dropped flat to the ground just in time to dodge what was meant to be a pounce from the second dinosaur, no doubt the companion of the first. It immediately rounded on the inmate as he scrambled to his feet, facing off with it. Although he had a gun tucked into the small of his back, he knew he only had one bullet left in the chamber before he needed to change magazines and that wasn't enough to take one of these down.
Instead, the inmate drew his knife and flicked it to full extension in one smooth motion. By the time the creature was lunging forward at him again, the weapon had become an extension of himself.
Although he didn't have martial arts training or the flow of his warden, whose movements were practiced, Costigan did have desperation on his side. He had grown up and learned to fight in a place where you sank or swam with nothing in between and it was exactly how these situations were -- kill or be killed. He knew that meant he still wasn't as good a fighter as Dick, but it kept him fast and, thus far, had kept him
( ... )
Now was the time when a "no guns" policy was starting to come back to bite him in the ass. Dick had fought a lot of things, but Velociraptors which were really more like Deinonychus? Were more or less uncharted territory
( ... )
Satisfied with Dick's performance as soon as the warden was flipping off the tree, the inmate returned his attention to his own. He darted to the blind side of the raptor just as it turned its head to look for him again. Costigan jumped forward, somewhat tackling the thing. He took the knife from its eye as they both tumbled to the ground and stabbed instead into the creature's throat-- once, then again and again. It kicked viciously and he was thrown off after the third stab, but it was bleeding terribly. As it struggled to find its legs, it was clear the monster wouldn't last. The raptor collapsed a moment later and its breathing slowed
( ... )
A weight lifted when he saw Costigan had it covered and immediately, he felt the pain of his hurt shoulder more intensely, putting a hand over it to try and stop the bleeding. He was about to ask if he was okay - Costigan was covered in blood, but considering how badly he'd injured the raptor, it was hard to tell how and where he was hurt, if he even was - when there was another rustle and growl from the trees
( ... )
Costigan froze for a split second when the thing jumped his warden, not entirely sure how to react or to help. Of course, he wasn't completely without training and it took only a second for him to launch back into action. As soon as he confirmed the magazine was in place, he slid the top of the gun back to slam a bullet into the chamber. Then he held the semi-automatic level with his eye, hands positioned perfectly one around the other. He waited until the thing was occupied with Dick's weapon in its mouth to exhale
( ... )
Dick heard the gunshots and felt the animal's blood splatter on his face almost at the same time. It was almost surprising enough to leave him stunned for a few moments, but he managed to kick back into gear, shoving the body off, grabbing his sticks and pushed himself to his feet. It was definitely dead. He looked over at Costigan and nodded quickly, wiping some of the blood off his face and really only succeeding in smearing it around more. "Yeah."
He was pretty scraped up and bleeding from a few decent sized gashes left by the raptor's claws, and his shoulder was bleeding pretty badly, but it wasn't anything too serious. They were both alive. That was really the important part.
He looked back over at Costigan again, still a little stunned by what had just happened. Costigan had probably just saved his life. "You?"
Costigan watched and, once Dick was on his feet again and the raptor still seemed dead, he slowly returned the gun to the small of his back. Then the inmate flinched slightly as the full weight of the pain of his wounds hit him and he shifted uncomfortably. He didn't even get it so badly as his warden, but his left arm was bleeding pretty badly and he was scratched up other places as well.
He noticed the wince and immediately wondered where he was injured. The blood covering both of them probably made it hard to tell what was from the raptors and what was from them. He put a hand to his shoulder and looked back over at the raptor he'd just pushed off him.
"Thanks." He managed a sort of shaky grin, wincing as he put more pressure on his shoulder before walking over to stand closer to his inmate.
Costigan moved his right hand to his stomach and contorted ever so slightly, but made no other motion beyond somewhat labored breathing. Then his left arm searched his shoulders, and uppers arms for injuries. He stiffened a little as a natural reaction to the pain and looked up at his warden again. "Small injury to the abdomen and a pretty deep piercing in the left forearm, sir."
It was like giving a report for him of where he would need to be treated for injuries sustained. Of course he was injured beyond that, but they were low priorities and didn't need to be looked at. All they needed was a hot shower, ice, and some rest.
Dick laughed a little hoarsely, but affectionately. "Don't call me that." He wasn't going to lecture him about it - he was too hyped up on adrenaline to really consider it - but they were partners, not boss and underling, and Dick was distantly a little frustrated that even now, Costigan stuck to that term of address over anything else he could have said.
He returned his sticks to the harness on his back, wincing as he moved his shoulder. "We should probably keep moving before something decides dead raptors would be a good snack."
Costigan frowned lightly at the response, but he didn't take it to heart given that Dick didn't pursue it. The inmate nodded and glanced around while Dick holstered his weapons, trying to get a better idea of their present environment. At the suggestion, he nodded again and started walking toward his warden to continue with him in the same path they were already heading, but into the bushes instead of the small sort of trail they had found.
"Maybe we should stick to the foliage until it gets a little darker."
"Good plan." He reached into his jacket pocket with the hand not currently putting pressure on his injured shoulder and pulled out a field dressing, pressing it against the injury as he copied Costigan and started heading into the bushes.
"You have a wrap or whatever those bandages are? For my arm?" There was a reason Costigan was all for going to the infirmary when he was injured; it was because he knew little to nothing about medical care and left it for the professionals. That said, his arm was still bleeding a bit and he knew it wouldn't be a good idea to let it bleed out while trying to get to a doctor. His stomach could wait.

He stopped immediately.
"Do you hear something?"
