[It's early evening by the time Valmont manages to wear out his welcome in the establishment he's chosen to patronize that evening, and as the proprietor gives him a none too gentle shove out the door and into the street, Valmont is really in no condition to complain.
He staggers forward a few steps under his own momentum, before swerving to the side and taking a few, extremely unstable steps down the boardwalk running down alongside the thoroughfare.
For a moment he considered making the full journey home, but the haze of opium and weariness ended up guiding him to a particularly sturdy post. Which was how he wound up slumped upright against the wooden post, snoring softly.]
