[Frances has a book with her that she's borrowed from the library. She has already cut her meal into bites and every now and again spares a glance and a hand from her book to stab a piece with her fork and pop it in her mouth. As always when she is at a meal and ignoring her drink, a spoon can be seen gently stirring its contents all by itself.]

[The Doctor has a heavy mind as he always does when a friend is injured, and he's not really doing more than sipping his tea. He isn't even the slightest bit hungry.

He sighs to himself, and his gaze swivels to the table next to his where the nice woman seems to be involved in her book. Neglecting her own drink.

The spoon is not neglecting the drink, though.

How odd.

He leans closer, curiously cocking his head as he tilts away from his table an looking at the busy spoon. Tilting further and further and further until the good Doctor seems to have forgotten that gravity should be pulling him down in his very off-kilter chair.

Only gravity seems to have forgotten that as well. It may be reminded at any moment, however, since it's not magic but rather sporadically impeccable balance keeping him upright. He glances to Frances finally, aware that he's starting to bizarrely edge at her personal space and probably should greet her.] If I had two of those that could do that, I could entertain myself endlessly while I was working. [The second he begins to speak, her gaze snaps up to him, and her hand closes on her cup, stopping the spoon. Whether this is an instinctual response to being approached by anyone who is not a member of her family and therefore 'in the know', or she just can't concentrate on three things at once, it is unknown. His remark seems to be one in good humor, however, she she returns it with a smile.]

Oh, that trick takes a lot more work. Hard to enjoy a good book at the same time, much less dinner, where there's tea to be stirred, or soup.

It certainly gives you an edge for multi-tasking. [An impish grin is ruined when gravity remembers him and he topples to the floor finally. Though he doesn't seem too bothered. He pops up like a rubber ball and brushes himself off, then kicks his chair back to a standing position with his foot.] I had noticed you had returned but I'm afraid I was a bit preoccupied and didn't have the opportunity for a suitable return greeting!

[The fall surprises her, and when he hops to his feet she looks just a little startled, but the fact that he's completely unruffled by the experience is charming at least. She smiles.]

How kind.

How is your reintroduction going? [He transfers his own cup from table to table and takes a seat beside of her, grinning impishly now.]

[She rests her chin on the back of her hand.] Quite well. No Inmate yet, but one must be patient for these things. As it is I'm only just becoming settled to the idea that Mister Swearengen is gone.

Oh, I know. I never quite get accustomed to it when people go. [He takes a sip, slouching with his arm over the back of the chair.] Did you have a pressing matter at home?

I did when I came before. Still do. Not the sort of thing that shall be rectified until I finish up here.

[She takes a sip from her cup.]

I'm sure I'll arrive in the nick of time as usual.

That's an excellent attitude. I specialize in nicking time, if you didn't know. [He watches the spoon a bit more.] Do you perform your spells verbally or do you have various media? [She at least has a more lovely nature than Lady Peinforte, he must note.]

[She chuckles a little, surprised at his candor, and pleased because it's so rare she is asked questions like this.]

That depends entirely upon the spell. [She says this with an enigmatic smile]

Oh? Well, I'm all ears and miscellaneous other parts and I still have half a cup of tea left. [He jostles the liquid in the cup]

You'll have to be more specific. [She tapped the side of her nose playfully.]

[Oh people beeping noses without him doing it. He's obviously slacking off on the job.] Mmmm. Things you might make to comfort someone. [Seems like a relevant topic.]

Depends upon the form of comfort. A little sickness -- some tea perks it right up. When my nieces were especially small they liked to be sung to sleep when they were unhappy. Injuries -- potions, salves. Not generally requiring a vocal component.
