Day 1: Nighttime [Capa/Hayley] victimofnoone February 26 2011, 03:40:25 UTC
The group had settled down for the night. Hayley was okay with the lack of fire at the moment so long as she could stay warm; at least the weather was decent and it wasn't freezing. She was still a tiny and fatigued girl and her body's ability to regulate temperature was declining though, so the lone, disgusting blanket they had found earlier in the day was wrapped around her shoulders.

The inmate sat quietly near the other three, knees pulled to her chest with her hood partially up on her head without blocking her peripheral vision. The pistol sat idly in her lap; she wasn't particularly fond of carrying around the bulky gun, but she knew how to use one and that put her ahead of Capa.

She glanced over at her warden in the silence, noticing he wasn't yet asleep. Her words were quiet, to avoid echoing in the dark, vast space. "Do you think we'll make it, Capa?"

At least with the zombies, she had been with Wichita.. and Tommy. The two of them alone were enough to defend her and having the others there only made it easier. With this? Paddy was tough, but she wasn't sure about his experience with weapons, Laura was about the same, and Capa was.. Capa.

Capa trusted Paddy. He had a good reputation and seemed stable enough. But it's not as if he had much choice. He was placing his life in the hands of a stranger. He was putting his inmate's life in the hands of a stranger. The man who ran the kitchens.

Capa was anxious and paced around the place they had decided to rest. He kept seeing things everywhere and hearing noises that were only fueled by his fear. That was not exactly the way that he had envisioned this port going. And yet, they were here. And he had to make the best out of it.

He sat down beside his inmate after a while, though, and when she spoke to him, he considered it.

"It's a possibility." But he knew that's not what she wanted to hear. He felt like there was something he should have added. "It's a likely possibility."

Capa's pacing only made Hayley more nervous than she already was and the girl wasn't great at dealing with unexpected stressors, so she was glad when he finally took a seat. At his reply, she gave him a sideways smile. Although it was hardly reassuring, it was a classic Capa thing to say and she appreciated his efforts at making it more positive.

"If something happens and I'm probably going to die, I don't want you to die trying to save me, okay? I mean, obviously I'd prefer not to die? But if it happens, try to save yourself. You can bring me back when you get back to the Barge."

He nodded once. It was sound reasoning and he had no inclination to argue with her. He hadn't stayed to try and save Cassie. He hadn't tried to save anyone else on that journey, aside from Mace. "It doesn't benefit anyone to be a hero." Especially when he was certainly not the hero type.

"But if something happens to me, you stay with Paddy. Do you understand me?"

Trust Capa to be logical about all of it. Still, she knew he was right, so she gave an awkward smile and scratched at the side of her eye with her thumb. "Yeah, Capa. I understand.. and I will. Like I said, I'd prefer not to die."
