Afternoon, Library (Armand!) ichoosefight February 3 2011, 17:29:54 UTC
[ Steph hadn't been to the library that much since she and Tim agreed to a truce. Of course she almost never went there to read or actually pick up books. It was easy to hide between the bookshelves and pretend that she wasn't completely predictable and anybody who knew her could find her in an instant. Instead she liked to pretend that Stephanie hiding in the library was a completely ridiculous idea. She was so above hiding. Although, to be fair, it seemed unlikely that she would run into Roman there. She kept her practice sticks with her anyway. Better safe than sorry.

So she hid in the library, she wasn't even sure what section, staring morosely at a copy of Treasure Island. It was a good cover for the fact that her mind was far, far away, and it had the added bonus of not making her homesick. ]

Sometime later, perhaps not too long though, quiet footsteps came up along the row of shelves to one side, then paused. After a hesitation that might have seemed suspiciously long, Armand stepped into the gap between the end of this row and shelves along the wall in that area. His eyes were focused on a row about six inches above eye level for him. There were a little more than a dozen narrow books with similar covers lined up there, their spines marked by a picture of a little red flower with five petals ( ... )

Steph was so absorbed in her thoughts that she jumped a bit at the intrusion. She blinked at him for a moment, trying to re-acclimate herself to reality long enough to say "hey Armand," before glancing back down at the page. She couldn't even remember what book she was pretending to read. A glance at the front cover showed her the title and she went back to staring blankly at the page before realizing that she should probably be trying to socialize.

"What's up?"

Armand turned his back to the books he had been approaching, and tried to strengthen his smile. "I was looking for something new to read." The lie sounded hollow to his own ears, but perhaps she'd take it for what it was, a poor cover-up. "Are--did you want something too?"

She quirked an eyebrow, staring at him blankly for a while as she tried to figure out what exactly was happening here. It was like she was only hearing half of a conversation. Which was technically true, but still confusing.

"I'm good. I just... like reading in... here." She gestured vaguely to her surroundings. It wasn't really a corner, or a nook, or a cranny, so she didn't know what to call it. Or rather, she didn't know what to call it besides "hiding place".

Her blank stare caused him to flush, almost guiltily. "It is a nice quiet spot," he observed. But he looked around again. "You like to stand to read?" There didn't seem to be any chairs or tables in this area.

She flushed too, averting her eyes because she'd actually forgotten how strange it must look for her to just be standing there staring at a book.

"Yes, actually. I love to read standing up. Especially when there's a good, sturdy wall to lean against! You should try it sometime, it's quite enjoyable and not uncomfortable at all."

Armand tried to keep his puzzled curiosity from his face. "Would you mind sitting?" he asked. Then he cringed. "I mean--I don't know what I mean." He kept his eyes on the book in her hands, then took a deep breath. "I wasn't expecting to find anyone in here." He'd been hoping rather fervently not to find anyone, actually.

She simply shrugged and plopped down on the ground, legs crossed. "I wasn't expecting anyone to find me here." It sort of defeated the whole purpose of hiding if people ran into her left and right.

Armand looked around again to be sure no one was watching them, then dropped down to sit in front of her. He seemed far less graceful than she did. "If it helps, I was not looking for you in particular."

"What were you looking for?" If he had been looking for a book, he was settling in for the long haul now. He didn't seem to have found whatever he was looking for.

Although he couldn't actually see the books he'd been looking for from where he sat, Armand glanced up anyway. He bit his lip, considering lying, but knowing how bad he was at lying, he settled on a half-truth. "There are some books about my brother-in-law that I wished to see."

Well that was interesting. "Why the sudden curiosity? If it's been here all this time, I mean. Or did you just find out about it?" She knew she was dangerously close to prying, but it helped distract her from her own problems. Totally worth it.

"I knew about them before," he said, dragging the words out. "I rather wish they weren't there. They aren't entirely accurate." He won't look at her, because he's far too close to lying right now to trust himself. He isn't quite, though.

She was trying to follow, but it was a little hard to focus. She was still too distracted by her own drama. She couldn't decide whether or not she believed him.

"You here to get rid of the evidence or see for yourself?"

That was far too close to the mark, and Armand flushed a little. "I know they're not right," he insisted. And again, he wasn't quite lying. The first book did have a few inaccuracies, at least, concerning himself. He hadn't read all of them. He only feared what they had to say about him.
