Home in the Morning. general_chang January 22 2011, 15:45:10 UTC
Chang has gotten used to her morning routine, despite the soft bed. She half-suspects that it's that that is giving her the various aches. Or at least, they don't make them better.

She bears this with her usual stoicism but is looking forward to starting her day. It is mostly clean up after yesterday's successful court case, so she doesn't expect to spend too much time at work.]

Ardent stumbled out of bed pretty early, and wanders down to the kitchen wearing a t-shirt and jeans. He's got a hoodie over his arm, but isn't wearing it. He's got to go out soon, but after picking up a stool, he walks straight to the fridge, stands on the stool, grabs the milk and drinks straight from the carton, then goes to the cupboard in search of magical things called 'pop tarts'.

He's not really paying attention to who else is in the room at this point.

Chang observes what Ardent is doing as she makes some tea. Finally, she speaks, as if trying out the phrase rather than actually greeting him. "Good morning, Adam."

"Morning, um..." He pauses, because female pronouns came less naturally to him, especially in reference to people related to him, and he wanted to call Chang, well, Chang. "Mum." He has a drink of the milk, and sticks some pop tarts in the toaster, "Have you tried these? They're quite good, even if they need these weird machines."

He nodded at the toaster. Electricity was a waste of time in his eyes.

"No, I have not," she replied. "Human food is bland enough without processing."

Ardent had another swig of milk, "Usually, yes, but these are quite good. Taste like strawberries."

"I shall try some," she decided after a moment's consideration.

Ardent was waiting by the toaster, and when it popped, he pulled both poptarts out, muttering 'owowowow' under his breath, and dropped one on one plate, and the other on a different one. He thrust the second plate towards her, "Careful, it's hot."

"So it would seem," she remarked with humour, before approaching the poptart with caution. A few unsuccessful attempts before she managed to taste some. "Hmmph." It may have burned her tongue a little. "It is nice."

"Told you it was good." He has a bite of his pop tart and is careful not to burn his tongue, "If you ignore the burning sensation."

"A challenging meal," she agreed. "Do you have work for today?"

"I do, yes." He ate his poptart, "All day, pretty much, too."

"It is satisfying," she remarked. "The occupations here. On the barge… you protect the books, but it is… like fighting entropy, it is a chore to defend that which should not require it, hmm? Reading should be… respected. It is disheartening when it is not. But here, you occupy a job that is… respected. That makes a difference to this world."

"It is a chore to make sure what needs to be respected is respected, it is as simple as that. I will happily do it for as long as I must." He shrugged, "But metalwork is worthy work, I admit. Even if I surpass most humans just through basic education."

"Of course," she replied. "Even if you were not beyond their years."
