[Ardent is sat on a stool, currently dressed up as a gnome. Because everyone wants to see a gnome. He doesn't look very pleased.

There is a sign somewhere around him saying 'Come and See Grumpy The Angry Dwarf'.

He folds his arms and watches punters pass by.]

[It's Mary first ever visit to a carnival! Everything's so new and exciting!

Oh dear God, what happened to that man. He looks like he's been squashed by something.]

[Ardent, meanwhile, is being sullen and staring up at her.] Evenin' ma'am.

Evening.

[He talks! He's polite! How cute!]

And...uh...how are you today?

[deepdowndark]

[Ardent looks up at her, and he's clearly not happy to be in this situation. He never has been.]

I've been sitting on a stool for a long time, and I'm quite bored and generally annoyed at being stared at.

[Pause]

No, ma'am, I'm just fine and cheery.

Oh.

[Mary looks away, now clearly embarrassed because she had been staring.]

Isn't being stared at your job though?

[Ardent shrugged,] I guess it is. Keep staring if you want. I can't say my job makes me happy, though.

[Ardent was one of the few people around here who was miserable and wouldn't pretend otherwise.]

But you're famous.

[And yes, it's said with a little awe. Mary's just a little bit star-struck.]

[Ardent gives her a smile,]

There is that, if nothing else. [He gets off her stool and offers her a hand,] It's nice to meet you.

[Mary hesitates before she finally takes the man's hand. She gives it a timid little shake.]

Charmed.

[Ardent goes back to his stool,]

It's a fine evening, isn't it?

[This is awkward for Mary. Really awkward.

The illusion is kind of shattered now that she realizes he's a person with feelings.]

Yeah. It's...turning out to be real nice.

[Ardent isn't particularly bothered, because it annoys him that he's been dragged into anything like this anyway.]

You come up from the town, then?

[She nods her head quickly, looking over her shoulder to see if anyone's spotted her talking to the small man. Nope, no one she knows. She's safe.]

Uh huh. Never been to a carnival before.
