Brennan looked up from writing in her note pad and squinted at Howie. "By all means, sergeant."

"I'm working on my next book." Brennan set her pencil down and turned her attention to her own sandwich, which she'd been neglecting. She tried to think of something to ask him, but she'd always been terrible at small talk, so instead of saying anything else, she took a bite.

Brennan, unaware as she was of the film about Howie, was completely oblivious to his discomfort. "Yes. Finding an unusual forensic technique or unique injury set I utilized or encountered can help me formulate ideas for the fictional cases in my books."

"I don't use the cases themselves. I wouldn't sensationalize real deaths that way." As much as Brennan respected anything, she respected the dead. "But if I didn't include real forensics and plausible scenarios, the books would be pure science fiction. I find drawing on my own experiences very valuable."

"Aside from the science, the books are completely fabricated. They bear very little resemblance to real life," Brennan insisted, flying in the face of her friends' insistence that the main characters were very transparently based on their team.

"I can't say anything about other novels, but mine have no real people in them."
