Well, we did say they need to meet!notarrowetteMarch 13 2010, 19:10:36 UTC
Cissie hadn't actually managed to sleep at all. After wandering around the ship and running into a few people, she had spent a few hours in the CES. By the time she wandered into the common room Svetlana was reading in, she was a little tired and sore but still not in the mood to sleep. She wasn't sure why, but she was fairly certain she would sleep well later that night at least. She had stopped by the library to pick up a book herself--maybe it was because of Beatty, but she had an urge to read as much as possible lately. She didn't want to interrupt anyone, so she just gave the other woman a polite-but-friendly smile.
Sveta looked over and nodded once, acknowledging her presence as she shifted a bit in the chair she was currently perched in. "Hello," she offered, not one to sit in quiet silence with a friendly face.
This place was too small to ignore someone, no matter how much you wanted to do so.
"Hi," Cissie said, her smile turning slightly shy. She didn't want to interrupt, but it was nice to see someone friendly. And she couldn't just say hello without introducing herself, could she? (Well, she could, but it would be rude.) "I'm Cissie."
Svetlana was certainly a new name for Cissie, as well. Most of the names she'd heard here were new, though. She smiled gratefully and sat with her. "It's nice to meet you," she said. "And yeah, I am. I've been here... almost a month now? I'm still kind of adjusting."
Only a month? What had Sveta done in her first month here? Met Neil. Befriended O'Brien (in a sense). Gone on her first port trip. It had been exciting and, more than that...overwhelming. She could understand how it would be difficult to...adjust.
"Oh. Well I certainly hope you have found a few people to trust and talk to. People who have shown you around. You are a warden?" Oh, she hoped that was the case.
"I have," Cissie said, smiling and thinking of Tim, Ruby, Ned, Martha and some of the other friends she had made so far. "And I am a warden, yes. There's actually an old friend here, so it's been nice reconnecting with him. Have you been here long?"
"Only about four months but...it has seemed so much longer. I suppose, though, that it seems that way for everyone." She smiled a bit, playing with the ends of her hair.
"I'm sure it does," Cissie murmured in agreement. She sighed at the question, reaching up to rub her temple. "Yes, I've met him." She gave Sveta a wry smile. "He thinks I'm a joke, because I'm so young."
"Oh, well you will just have to prove him wrong, then." She smiled a bit. "I have had two inmates. One...one did not work out and I deeply, deeply regret that. She is still aboard. And this new one..."
She shook her head. "I do not know what to do with him."
"I guess I will," Cissie agreed with a smile. She let the smile fade into a more sympathetic one as she listened, nodding. "I'm sorry about your other inmate. I'm... not entirely sure what to do with mine yet either," she admitted with a shrug. "But I suppose figuring it out is part of the point?"
"It is. And it is not fun, but it it necessary and, in the end, it is worth it. That is where I failed with Ruby. It took me so long to figure her out and, when I did, I realized that all I was doing was making it worse."
Svetlana marked her page and then set the book aside so that she could give the girl her full attention.
Cissie curled her legs under her, facing her. She sighed a little. "It would be easier if there was a manual or something. 'How to Redeem Your Inmate in Ten Easy Steps.' Or twenty. I'm not picky."
Svetlana could only chuckle a bit at the thought of what that manual might contain. "Perhaps there is one. But we are just not allowed to see it. Or maybe that is what the file is supposed to be for."
She did the same with her own feet, glad to feel that she didn't have to be so...stuffy.
Cissie laughed, smiling easily. "Maybe we should. A manual isn't any good if you can't read it." She laughed a little. "And there would be a certain irony to it, given how much my inmate hates any reading material."
"Oh? Who is your inmate?" She did not make a habit out of making friends with the inmates, so she was not sure about who many of them were, especially the new ones. However, she could probably guess a few.

"Svetlana," she said and moved over so she could sit if she wanted to. "Are you new here? I have not seen your face before?"
