Fuzzy time it. I think he's in five places at once, now. :p boeshane_boy February 18 2010, 19:30:33 UTC
Jack grabbed a beer off the bar as he walked into the pub. It didn't take long to spot Owen, and he had to remind himself not to haul off and hug the little Weevil King. He could wait till after the first beer, at least. Sitting down across from the other man, Jack smiled. Grinned, really, because here Owen was, alive, breathing, and hopefully not vomiting all that scotch later.

"It's good to see you."

"I'm touched," Owen said dryly because Jack was acting weird... er, weirder than he usually did and that was just immediate cause for concern. "How's the team, Jack? Replace us yet?"

Ouch. Jack took a drink and leaned back in his chair, because this was going to suck a lot more than he'd thought it would. Maybe this was a bad idea. "Thought about it."

That earned him a surprised eyebrow. Because that didn't sound like Torchwood. Suzie had been dead for about three hours before Jack hired Gwen on. Which yeah, he sort of preferred Gwen to Suzie but it felt kind of cold and too professional.

"That doesn't sound like Torchwood."

"It wasn't for lack of trying." Besides, Martha was probably better off with Law and Order UK UNIT. At least he didn't get her and Mickey killed, too. "Just didn't pan out."

Interesting.

Owen sipped at his drink for a few moments and then put the glass to the side. "So what's been happening back home then? You gotta keep a bloke updated. Tell me Gwen didn't cry too much. That's just uncomfortable."

Yes, this was definitely a bad idea. Why didn't he come with a cover story? Because he hadn't expected to find people he knew. Great. Jack took another long drink, toying with the neck of the bottle. "Not too much. Rhys took care of her. Very well, actually. She's pregnant."

Yeah Jack, that lying streak of yours? Is exactly why Owen was not at all happy to see you. Well, part of him was happy but mostly he didn't think he wanted to put up with Jack Harkness's bullshit anymore.

"No shit?" Owen asked, nodding a bit. "Well, one of us should have a bloody normal family. Good for her. What about that smug bastard, Ianto?"

Of course he'd want to know. Jack just smiled tightly and took another drink. "She's well on her way to a normal family. Mighteven go for the good old two-point-five and a white picket fence. If they can find one, anyway. Cardiff's not that big on white picket fences."

He noticed that avoidance, mister.

Owen scowled at Jack, smacking his palm against the table. "Goddamit Jack, could you once in your life treat me as an equal and not some idiot child? I can tell when you're avoiding something."

Jack set his bottle down, chin raised while he steeled himself. "Then be a responsible adult and let it go," he said - more sharply than he'd intended. He wanted to tell himself that they were such children sometimes, never doing what they should, always saying what they shouldn't. But sometimes they were more mature than him, and he couldn't even remember how old he was anymore.

"I have the bloody right to know what's going on with my teammates if you know, Jack," Owen shot back at him. He was getting the feeling that something terrible had happened to Ianto. Which he never would've wished on the man, despite all of their disagreements.

"It's always about you. It's always about whether or not something upsets Jack. You're a selfish prick and you damn well know it."

Yes, he knew it. And he wasn't about to grow up and have a moment with Owen now. "They're not your teammates anymore," he pointed out. Probably shouldn't have. "You don't take orders from me now, remember? So they're not your teammates." He didn't want to have to tell Owen too.

"Then they're my fucking friends and if you're going to go around causing their deaths, then you owe it to me to be a man and admit it." Mostly he was talking about Tosh here but it probably related to Ianto as well.

boeshane_boy February 19 2010, 05:50:14 UTC
Probably. Definitely. Nothing like heading into possible danger without a backup plan beyond, 'I can't die.' He should have talked Ianto out of it. He should have made him stay.

"Fine. You want me to tell you that Gwen was the only one to come out of it okay? She was. Ianto's dead. You remember what it's like? He's not even here. So much for that." Jack pushed back his chair and stood up, beer abandoned. He didn't want to admit responsibility for it, not out loud. So he turned to stalk away.

That was right, Jack. Run away from him.

But Jack had a point. If Ianto was dead, then he was in that darkness, the very same darkness that Owen himself had decided was too much and made the deal to come here instead. Anything was better than that and it was just, icing on the cake that he got to breathe again.

"It might not mean anything," Owen pointed out a lot of the edge gone from his voice. "Tosh was here for seven months before I showed up and I have not been dead for that long. I'm sure of it. Time's different here."
