A trap

Jan 10, 2010 18:01

Who: The Rani Ushas and Selene
What: Ushas attempts to incapacitate (not kill) Selene and steal a bunch of stuff.
Where: A lab space in the hellhole known as the infirmary.
When: The day after this exchange
Warnings: Nastiness from the engineered virus.

Normally the trashing of the infirmary would have bent Ushas seriously out of shape, but she considered it serendipitous this time )

selene, the rani

In either reality, it was true to say that Selene was no scientist. She had an analytical mind, but her speciality was in hunting down and eradicating things.

But she had vulnerabilities here. Her physiology was merely in a constant state of preservation, not true, magical 'undeath'. She still needed to breathe and, in this dimension, was also still vulnerable to UV light.

There was also something else. Another biological weakness, not shared by either humans or the other vampires. Something which a pathogen could very possibly attack. Something which, here, her darker self had alluded to in journal comments.

"Yes?"

The voice came through intercom. Selene watchful, on the other side of the glass. Three victims she had secured fmor the last port, gagged and bound in readiness to test out the necessary.

Selene wanted something able to be used on human beings. Something specific to their biology. A weapon which could, if ever needed to, be released on mass populations, once returning to her world. The next step would be for use on lycans, but she needed to give Ushas an organic sample for that. This was just the first stage in what she felt to be a necessary step in vampiric supremecy.

"Is it ready?"

"Yes. I must admit, I'm quite pleased with it. It's keyed very specifically to certain markers peculiar to the human genome, and should prove no risk to you. Or myself, for that matter." She removed the isolation dish from the microscope and nodded toward the humans. "Would you care bring them in to do the honours? It is your project, after all."

"Yes, well... Considering my own differences, I've little to worry about."

That was a trait this version of Selene had inherited more of from Viktor: A heightened sense of arrogance and assumption that certain aspects of leverage would prevent particular consequences. Otherwise, she might have picked up on an otherwise blatent new verbal clue.

With a swift yank, the glass was slid open and her captives pulled inside. Door closing behind her.

"I assume they're already breathing it in? Or do I need to get them to touch something?"

A quick glance was made at her watch. Selene was a stickler for efficiency, no matter the reality.

"When I open the isolation dish, the exposure will be complete," she replied, not meeting the victims' eyes. Apparent remorse. If she was right, though, they would be fine.

Pythia, she hoped she was right.

She took a step toward the humans; she'd have liked to at least give them a reassuring look, but she couldn't risk it, and her hearts hurt at the sight of fear on their faces. She opened the lid of the isolation dish and set it on the ground before them.

And as she rose to her feet, with a flick of the wrist, she sent the lid flying at Selene's face. It wasn't entirely necessary and was frankly a bit theatrical for her tastes-but with any luck it would speed matters up nicely.

Well. Assuming Selene didn't cut her and the poor captives to pieces in the minutes she likely would have before conking out. This could have been planned better, couldn't it?

Selene's response was predictable. Cursing aloud, she demanded to know what had been done; face aghast and hastily wiping it on sleeve in realisation what the consequences of that could be.

"Tell me what you DID!"

Repeating her demand, one of her two handguns was unholstered from thigh and aimed squarely at the Time Lady's head. Then, realising that a death would do her no good, moved it lower, to abdomen.

"If your internals are anything like a human's, I suggest you start explaining!"

That was when she faltered. A look of nausea both expressed and felt, as the vampiress began to heave... Selene's own species had a very important weakness: To ingest any other food source than blood could stand a very real chance of killing her. She might not have just tried to consume human food, but if something had certain effects on her digestive system...

"You..."

There came the vomit and she could no longer support herself on two feet. Finger pulling the trigger as her vision swam, unable to properly aim.

Her gagged and bound captives, needless to say, began to panic.

"I just gave you a stomach bug!" Ushas said cheerfully as she picked up a scalpel from the lab table. "Modified, of course, so you-" she moved around behind the first of the human captives and began to saw at her bonds, "are perfectly fine. There might be a trifling headache, as I couldn't separate all the effects, but I was on a schedule, after all." The scalpel wasn't the best tool to cut through things, but it was working, just not as quickly as she would have liked.

"You bitch..."

Selene couldn't manage any more. She was on hands and knees, regurgitating her stomach contents of blood onto the floor. Body doing its best to purge itself of what was essentially potentially lethal contamination.

Ushas would need to work fast. Once Selene recovered, there would be only a short period of time before assistance was called and the hunt would begin. There was no doubt the teenage sadist, Ace, was going to be first in line to try and deal with that.

And the look the vampiress shot at her was one of poison.

"Come on, on your feet, there you go-you too-no, no time for your hands we've got to-help her, you two-" Two of the captives were free now, tugging off their gags and pulling the third to her feet.

The clock was ticking. No time even to try and disable Selene any further; Ushas hustled the captives out of the lab and slammed the glass door behind her, giving the lock a good kick to jam it.

She paused just long enough to grab as much as she could off the open tables-bottles of pills, hypodermics, other items she didn't even look at very closely. "Follow me," she barked at the captives. "Run!"

Next stop, if all went according to plan: the Rani's quarters. Which she hoped like hell she could barricade long enough to get help.
