Wichita sat at an empty table shuffling a small stack of assorted holiday desserts across a plate. Since leaving port, she had been in a bit of a gloomy mood. No more strange people to commiserate with, no more distractions for Hayley to entertain herself. She wondered -- had Hayley actually picked a dress for tonight with the five hundred dollars she'd provided? If not, what had she bought? Maybe she ought to search her room soon.

Wichita had picked out a decent number for herself, though she couldn't quite pin down why she even cared to dress for the event. Maybe it'd been the lack of occasions to dress up formally for in her recent past. Perhaps it was that she had accepted the impossibility of the need for formal wear ever arising again in Zombieland with a bit of sadness. She crossed her legs, let out a soft sigh, and began drinking from a flute of champagne.

JD wasn't going to judge. He didn't even want to be at this social event but Morgan made him come, just like she had dragged him shopping for the damn thing too. He was dressed plainly in a tuxedo jacket and slacks, but the vest was of a checkered variety and he had a black fedora hat on his head. The boy was from the 80's so it was no surprise he knew how to accessorize. The earring from his ear was no longer a hoop but a cross.

He had really just been sitting back against the wall scoping out the crowd. He hadn't cared enough while living to attend these shindigs and he didn't care now- but when he saw his previous... encounter... looking doom and gloom he decided to say something, against his better judgment.

"Hey," he started at first both hands out in front of him on the cloth. "You should try to the pie, it's good." Of course- he hadn't made it. He could make it better. He just wasn't allowed in the kitchen yet. "Yeah... Merry Christmas."

She looked up lazily at the person addressing her, and then abruptly looked down, heart pounding. She set the champagne flute down gently, controlled; she didn't want it to break. She wasn't sure what she was expecting sitting here alone. She hadn't particularly responded to any of his apologies because she hadn't figured out a way to cope with her anger. Even now, she had stopped shuffling the items on her plate and was clenching both fists in her lap. She could see the white knuckles.

Be mature, she thought. He'll go away of his own accord.

"Did you make it?" She said, still looking down at her hands. So much for mature.

JD canted his head to the side and gave her a long thoughtful look beneath his lashes. "No, I didn't." He still felt bad about the poisoning, the guilt still weighed on him- especially when she had said that and the tone she used just made it worse. It felt like the twinge of a knife hitting him in his side.

He consented himself to stay though, with his palms still pressed on the table in front of him, so she could see where they were. "What did Santa bring you?"

She could tell he was trying. Not even the sarcastic, patronizing trying she was expecting. Really, sincerely trying. It almost made her feel something akin to pity, but she quickly shut the idea away as a flood of negative memories took the small twinge's place. She didn't know how to stop the anger. She had no idea how to control herself.

Someone had better save JD before her white, tense hands found the pistol tucked in her garter belt.

She took a deep breath as an attempt stave off the crazy thoughts and held the bridge of her nose between two fingers. She spoke evenly without looking at him, "Lots of stuff. A dog, most notably. It's a handful. Wouldn't stop whining as I was leaving to arrive here." She clasped both hands in front of her on the table and regarded him critically, "...and what did he bring you?"

JD smiled a little at the mentions of a dog and neglected to ask what breed just so that he wouldn't give himself away. "A snake, a lot of art supplies, a book about surgery, a copy of the Hippocratic oath, clothes, cigarettes, music for my sax and boxing gloves."

JD looked away briefly, having a hard time making eye contact when he could tell his being around her was giving her a hard time.

"Art supplies? What kind?" She looked back down at her hands after he broke eye contact, "Did you bring any cigarettes with you?"

JD paused and his eyes lifted toward his skull as he mentally sorted through what he had been given. "Some charcoals, some paints, some pads, the whole shebang, really."

At the mentioning of cigarettes JD pulled one from the packet in the pockets of his slacks and handed it to her with his Bic lighter.

She gladly accepted the items and lit the cigarette, taking a long drag before handing back the Bic, "You're an artist then?", she said examining the cigarette's cherry. This made it much easier to relax, even though she knew she shouldn't. Her sister wasn't here, though, and she wasn't going to forgo something that might keep her from assaulting him.

"Thanks for this. What am I smoking? It's not bad."

Unfortunately JD had been burned with cigarettes before and it wouldn't do much aside from making him angry and in a rage he could barely feel pain. He was calm and rational enough now though.

"Yeah, you could say that. Something of one." He didn't like talking to someone about his secret things. Things like his art. Especially if that someone didn't like him. "They're camel wides," he said quickly.

She remained silent, ashing the cigarette in the champagne flute. She was calm now, but also not looking nor talking to JD. She didn't know what else to say to him when it occurred to her.

"Social Distortion, huh?"

"They're decent," he blurted before really thinking.

"Theirs was the first CD I bought. Only heard the one, though -- not bad. Had one hell of a time finding a tape deck, though." She said flatly.

She knew they were from him -- none of the people she knew aboard came from a time where tapes were prolific. It was a nice thought, but hardly made up for what happened.

"CD?" JD rose a brow but didn't say much else.
