McCoy wasn't smiling exactly but there was a lift to his lips that gave him away. For once it was directed at Pavi, not just the solid ground and blue sky- the sea air. Lord it was good to be on real land again.

"I know." He answered, patting Pavi on the shoulder as he adjusted his own pack and walked passed. "I thought you were born on an island." He commented, turning to see if Pavi was following or wanted to enjoy the view further.

"Not - like this," Pavi said, stumbling after McCoy without really paying attention to where he was going. "It was more..."

In a rare incident, words escaped him. Dead, dark, unpleasant? When it was all he'd known, Sanitarium would have registered as completely normal, but compared to this...

"...it is hard to explain. I will show you the recordings from home, sometime."

"Well I have to admit, even back home nothing was this-" McCoy glanced around. "-untouched."

He continued walking into the wooded area, more in a stroll than a hike. Lord knew they wouldn't be enjoying solid ground for long or anytime soon after this. He made a pointed effort not to go down that road regarding space and everything you lost exploring it.

"Careful Pavi, it almost looks like you're enjoying yourself." He said wryly as they walked.

Pavi shrugged. He wasn't going to admit that maybe this - whatever it was - wasn't a wholly terrible idea after all, but the change of scenery was enjoyable enough to counterweigh the irritation of spending time with McCoy. And the wildlife was - well, some of the insects were practically cute compared to the warped monstrosities you'd encounter back home.

"Of course I would not give you that satisfaction, dottore."

"Of course." McCoy rolled his eyes, continuing down the untrodden path in relative silence. There were always some concerns about a new territory, compatibility and species occupying- hostile natives and erosive bacteria. He had checked his tricorder earlier, nothing seemed out of place. It was very much an earth-like planet, fairly newborn most likely but harmless.

It took a half an hour to make it to a clearing McCoy deemed habitable, not too far from the ship but not so easy for Pavi to just run off if he decided to throw a tantrum. He placed his large pack down, keeping his medpack with a hypo and his phaser latched closely at his side.

"Alright, you know how to gather firewood don't you?" He asked, turning to Pavi.

Pavi gave him a look that communicated the futility of the question. In what possible circumstances before this exact moment would he have ever been called upon to gather firewood? It was as if the man hadn't even touched his file.

"Is there...something about it that is particularly complicated?"

McCoy had been prepared for that look. "Just get sticks- larger ones if you can. Once night falls a fire will help keep the animals away." He said, wondering if there was any way Pavi could really mess that order up. He paused before speaking again. "And don't wander too far." Yeah, hopefully that would keep him out of real trouble. He had a feeling Pavi could scream quite well if he needed help.

Pavi was obviously getting better at this 'empathy' business, because he could very easily work through a scenario in which he refused to do his part and a) McCoy threatened him until he obeyed or b) there was no fire at all and they were both torn apart by wolves. Both of them sounded marginally more tiresome than doing as he was told.

"I will not." But he gave the scowl of someone who considered this work to be beneath him as he moved away.

"Always a team player." McCoy said, more to himself as he headed off to find food. There were berries nearby, and he had brought some food with them since there was no way in hell he was bringing Pavi hunting (he wasn't much of a hunter himself anyway.) He stopped at a spring, checked the water and took a drink before heading back to camp to make sure Pavi hadn't been eaten by a bear or something equally ridiculous and likely.

He hadn't. The pile of wood he'd accumulated was fairly pathetic, but Pavi hadn't seen the point in making it any bigger - it was warm there and then, and he didn't have much concept of how cold a place like this could get at night. When McCoy returned he was sitting neatly cross-legged in their campsite, cleaning the dirt from under his nails with a toothpick.

He acknowledge McCoy with a glance. The general air of grubbiness the doctor's sporting is actually a slight improvement.

McCoy regarded the pile with a sigh, pinching the bridge of his nose. It wasn't hopeless but still. "Alright, get up. You're helping me pitch a tent. We can work on that-" He gestured at the pile. "-afterwards."

I apologise for all the grammatical fail in that last tag. *headclutch* themostdashing November 23 2009, 02:43:31 UTC
"It is very convenient that I now have to help you when you have spent very many months doing nothing to help me," Pavi said, but he got up anyway and slid effortlessly into McCoy's personal space. "You wish for the Pavi to help erect something of yours, of course he will serve."

lol I probably grammatically fail without noticing all the time so of course you're forgiven :> hyposprayed November 23 2009, 03:17:46 UTC
"One failed request is hardly what I'd call months of doing nothing for you." McCoy glared at him, not backing away just yet out of pure stubbornness more than anything else. Considering Pavi already knew how much it bothered him it was a a fairly pointless gesture, but damned if he'd just back down.

"Unless you'd like to sleep under the stars we're pitching the tent Pavi, and the more trouble you give me the less inclined I'll be to letting you sleep in it, understand?"

"Hm." Pavi had started ignoring McCoy's words in favour of something more interesting he'd noticed - a band-aid on the good doctor's neck, visible above his collar. Either he did himself an injury with a hypospray, he fell foul of a Barge vampire or...

"Dottore, what is this?" He reached in, fingertips brushing the skin next to the band-aid.

It took McCoy a moment to realize what Pavi was mentioning, for some reason the fingertips brushing his skin sent a jolt through his thoughts. His thoughts, someone's thoughts at least, which didn't make any sense because who else's thoughts would be in his head? Whatever the case Pavi needed to move his hand, now.

McCoy grabbed his wrist to pull it away, which only made the next jolt worse. Only this time it wasn't thoughts, it was a city with a long dark street, a back of the mind sort of fear and people who looked more like dolls or corpses walking the sidelines. He knew it wasn't right but something else protested how normal it was, how some of these people and their unnatural parts were so close to perfection. Look at nature, it rotted and darkened and failed, an age old betrayal that the gleam of surgical knives and the steady, constant beat of a fake heart never indulged in.

He sharply let go of Pavi's wrist, blinking at him. "What..." He started, head steadily clearing from the booming announcements of GeneCo's Corneal Plus

That had been...

Pavi took an unsteady step back, his other hand going to his wrist. He had felt...he wasn't sure, sudden flickers of memory rising to the surface, going just as quickly - all of it rushing past in a shock when McCoy had touched him.

"Doctor. What just happened?"
