Topher, too, was bored. He'd made some progress on his video games, but he was tired of being cooped up in his room. He decided to take a stroll through the ship and see what each level had to offer for entertainment. So far, there wasn't much.
When he got to level six, he took note of the usual common room, but there was also a room off to the side and from it her heard clacking sounds. He went to the doorway and saw a blond girl playing pool by herself. "Pool's a lot more challenging when you're not playing against yourself," he said, not caring if he was interrupting her alone time.
Veronica turned around quickly, eyeing the stranger for a few moments. She didn't recognize him really, so he was probably one of the newbies or someone that just didn't talk a lot, though she doubted that. No one really escaped her attention for very long.
She leaned against the pool cue, tipping her blonde head to the side. "Are you challenging me to a game then?"
"Sure, why not," Topher stated. "Can't be any worse than the other you that has 0 points."
He walked over to the wall where the extra pool cues were hanging and chose one. Then he stepped up to the table and chalked the tip of the stick. "You wanna wrack 'em up or do you want me to do it?"
Veronica watched him silently for a few moments, trying to figure if this new person was a friend or foe or someone that she could easily get a rouse out of, which was like a one-sided friendship, only benefiting her really. He hadn't annoyed her yet, which was a good sign but she wasn't about to warm up to him either.
She gestured with the pool cue in her hand. She wasn't that competitive when it came to sports of any kind, mostly because she knew that she was anywhere from average to terrible at them. "Be my guest."
Topher gathered all the pool balls and put them in the triangle. He wasn't great at this game, but it didn't take a genius (which he was) to figure out you put the balls in the wholes to win. "Your break, Blondie."
He didn't call her Blondie as a derogatory term, he just didn't know her name and he always called people absurd nicknames.
She looked at him over her shoulder for a moment before moving to take her shot. It wasn't a spectacular break but she did manage to sink one of the striped balls. She wasn't really sure which one it was.
"Now's the part were you tell me your name. And I give you a weirdo nickname."
"Whoa, ease up on the rudeness there Veronica," he said, with a hand on his chest as if the comment hurt. "My name's Topher." He lined up his next shot and took it, not sinking the ball but getting close.
Veronica placed her hand over her heart, giving him a look that said she was mortally wounded by his accusation of her rudeness. If he knew her or was good at that sort of thing, he'd be able to tell that she wasn't offended and was mostly making fun of him.
"I'm nothing but sunshine and puppy dogs and rainbows, I'll have you know... Gopher," she finished with a smirk as she moved to take her shot, since she did, after all, promise him a weird nickname.
"Gopher? Really? Is that the best you can come up with?" he replied, not insulted by the nickname at all.
It was his turn to shoot again, so he took the shot and sunk the ball. He was pleased by this and lined up his next shot. "So, Veronica, how's it feel to be Archie's bitchy fiancee?" He figured if she was gonna call him Gopher he could at least compare her to the comic character.
Veronica shrugged a little bit. It was a pretty bad nickname but she was off her game right now. Or something. Maybe she didn't damn well feel like being creative at the moment, since in case he hadn't noticed, she'd been having alone time.
Wow, that sounded weird.
"Oh you know. I spend all my days between rolling around in my big pile of money and shooting him down. It's a tough life I lead but someone's gotta do it," Veronica rolled her eyes dramatically, waiting for her turn.
"There aren't really any famous Tophers. Why do you think that is?" she asked, in a sickly sweet sort of way that said she was implying he and all Tophers were losers or something.
